This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in 1910. The structure is a 1.5 story brick house covered in
stucco, built in the Queen Anne style typical of the turn of the century housing styles. It has a rectangular plan shape, with a concrete
foundation, which may be a later improvement. The roof is front-gabled, but irregular due to a canted wall on the east elevation and a
bay window on the front façade. A gabled dormer is located on the west elevation. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles, and the exterior
walls are clad in stucco.
The primary façade faces north, onto W. Lamme St., and is asymmetrical. The primary entrance is on the east end of the north facade,
and the door is beneath a pedimented porch overhang. To the west of the door is a three-sided bay window. In the apex of the gable, in
the upper half story, is an oculus window. Underlying brick details are visible around the oculus window and at the corners of the
facade. The windows appear to be original and openings are intact.
There is a wood-framed, gable roofed barn in the back to the south of the house, and appears to be historic. It is visible from the alley
running to the south of the houses on this north facing block of W. Lamme St.
The site is well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes multiple large mature coniferous trees. More mature coniferous
trees are located on the west side of the house, as well as in the backyard.
The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the
fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic
district.” Since then, the property has come of age. The site is in good condition overall. The most notable alteration to the property is
the application of stucco siding, which was likely done within what is now considered the historic period. Therefore, Metcalf finds
that it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prior to construction of a house at 512 W Lamme St, this property was part of Tracy’s 2nd Addition which was platted by William H.
Tracy on May 17, 1883. A house was built on this property sometime between 1891 and 1904 according to the Sanborn Insurance
Maps.
Cora E. Hosom purchased this property from William H. Tracy on October 12, 1891. Cora (Stranahan) Hosom was born on March 18,
1867 in Clayton, Contra Costa County, California. Cora was a teacher in Gardiner, MT for many years. Cora died on January 29, 1953
in Seattle, King County, WA. She is buried in the Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle, WA (The Great Falls Tribune 5 Feb
1953). Cora Hosom lost the property due to unpaid taxes and the property was sold to Mildred McComb via public auction on April
14, 1898. Mildred McComb sold the property on April 14, 1898 to C. H. Logan. Logan sold it to Alfred Lycan on February 23, 1900.
Lycan only held the property for a short time before selling it to Harry Biemstrough on July 17, 1900. Biemstrough sold it to Edward
Miller on December 8, 1900 (see table).
Edward and Maimie Miller owned the property until 1909. Edward Miller was a contractor (R.L. Polk & Co 1904), who sold the
property to David N. Williams on February 26, 1909. David N. Williams was born in Pomroy, Ohio to Noah and Mary Williams in
1857. David Miller and Dora Moore were married at Reese Creek, Gallatin County, MT on April 24, 1892. They lived in the
Springhill, MT area for a time. David was postmaster in Springhill and also farmed in the area. They moved into Bozeman and lived
at this property from 1909 to 1920. Dora was born in Malad, Idaho to Amoes B. and Celia Moore on May 13, 1870. Dora Williams
died in Los Angeles, CA on November 28, 1945. David Williams died in Los Angeles, CA on August 16, 1928 (Findagrave.com
2004).
In 1920, the property passed to William Paxton. William Paxton was born in Putnam County, Indiana on May 13, 1865. When
owning the house on West Lamme, William was married to Martha Paxton. Martha (Markle) Paxton was born in Missouri to Jim and
Lucy Markle on January 13, 1858. Martha “Mattie” Paxton died on July 9, 1931 in Bozeman, MT. Martha was buried in Sunset Hills
Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. After Martha’s death in 1931, William Paxton married Mae Florence Crum on May 19, 1934
(Ancestry.com 2017). William Paxton died in 1937, when he was 72 years old; a truck struck a horse he was riding. At the time of the
accident, he received a broken leg and suffered from shock. He died a few months after the accident at his home two miles east of
Bozeman. After William’s death, the property transferred to Mae Paxton. She sold the property to William’s children - including Mary
M. Paxton, Vera Borge, Lila McClarty, Ruth Napoli, and Ella Mae Snyder - on February 24, 1938. They sold the property to Roxie L.
Gillespie on July 24, 1939.
Roxie L. Gillespie worked in the shoe repair business at 112 West Main Street and lived at 512 West Lamme Street. Roxie was born
on January 6, 1899 in Moundville, MO to George and Ellen Jane Gillespie. Roxie Gillespie married Rosamae “Rose” Lively on
December 23, 1922 (The Billings Gazette 13 March 1987). Roxie and Rosamae divorced in 1935. Rosamae later married Walt Trewin
and moved to Los Angeles, CA, yet she moved back to Montana at the end of her life. Rosamae died on March 11, 1987 and is buried
in Sunset Memorial Park in Belgrade, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Roxie also remarried, to Blanche Gillespie. Roxie died on August
10, 1974 and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Belgrade, MT. Roxie and Blanche sold the property to Donald W. and Patricia L.
Tucker on January 24, 1961.
The property has been owned by Robert Britten since 2001.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-
year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.”
Since then, the property has come of age.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district
composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the
Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008).
Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 2nd Addition in order to evaluate district potential.

The site is in good condition, overall. The most notable alteration to the property is the application of stucco to the exterior walls,
which is not in keeping with the early 20th-century style of the structure. However, based on the appearance of the stucco, it was likely
applied in the early mid-century, which is considered within the historic period. This residence has not changed in appearance in many
years. The stuccoed walls affect the integrity of materials and, to some extent, feeling. The integrity of design, location, setting,
workmanship, and association remain intact. Metcalf finds that the structure retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
