The primary residential structure is a wood-framed, single-story craftsman bungalow. The structure has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The roof is front-gabled with a shed roof on the north end, spanning the rear elevation. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles. Rafter tails are exposed along the gable sides. A shed roof hangs over an enclosed front porch on the south façade, with a corrugated metal awning that shelters an off-center basement entry. The exterior walls are clad in asbestos shingles, and an interior brick chimney is located at the north end of the structure. The primary façade faces south, onto W. Lamme St. The primary entrance is within an enclosed porch, which is accessed from a set of wood steps on the east side. A basement apartment is also accessed from the primary facade by a below-grade entrance on the west end. The basement hopper windows are above grade. Three-over-one-lite wood windows are located on the south façade and appear to be the original windows. All other windows and openings seen from the ROW appear to be original and intact. The house has an attached single-stall garage located on the northwest side. It has a shed roof, clad in asphalt shingles. The vehicle entry is a sectional wood door, opening south onto a driveway that follows the west boundary of the property. The secondary residential structure, located to the northeast of the primary house, is set-back from the property line. It is a wood- framed gable-front Craftsman style “mother-in-law” house, with stuccoed exterior walls. It has a front-gabled roof, clad in asphalt shingles. The primary entrance is on the west end of the south façade, and is accessed by concrete steps. Wood windows appear to be original. The site is well maintained and the features are in good condition. Vegetation in the front yard includes multiple large mature deciduous trees, and one small deciduous tree directly in front of the enclosed front porch on the south façade. To the east of the primary residence, and to the south of the secondary residence, is a large mature coniferous tree. The backyard appears to have multiple mature deciduous trees and bushes. The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. The site is in good condition overall, and Metcalf finds that both features retain sufficient integrity to convey their historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 507 & 509 W LAMME ST Site Number: 054 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the two structures at 509 W Lamme St, this property was part of the land William H. Tracy purchased from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted this area as Tracy’s 3rd Addition on May 16, 1883. William and Sarah Tracy sold these lots to Ella T. Martin on January 22, 1894. Ella T. Martin was born on March 21, 1855 in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania to Nathanial and Maria Clark. Ella’s family moved to Michigan to avoid impacts from the Civil War. While in Michigan she received an education and married E. Broox Martin. In the 1880s, the Martin family moved to Montana where Broox assisted in establishing the Bozeman Milling Company, becoming general manager. In 1892, he also became the president of the Commercial National Bank. The family lived at 814 South Willson Street. Ella and Broox were involved heavily in real estate, and legend has it that Ella owned one of the first electric cars in Bozeman. They built the Michigan Block at 20 West Main Street, the Evergreen Apartments on West Koch Street, and the Clark Apartments at 616 South Grand Avenue. The Martin family was instrumental in establishing the YMCA in Bozeman (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 17 Mar 2004). Ella founded the Mount Hyalite Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and was state regent of the Montana DAR organization. She was also instrumental in the building of the Beall Recreation Center park and building. She dedicated the Craftsman-style structure to the City of Bozeman in 1927 and provided funding for its maintenance. Although the buildings on this site do not have a direct tie to the Martin family, because of Ella Martin’s interest in Bozeman’s built environment, her influences are reflected in other buildings throughout Bozeman (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 17 Mar 2004). After her death on June 24, 1940, a student loan fund - the “Ella T. Martin Student Loan Fund” - was established (The Montana Standard 22 Sep 1940). Ella and her husband Broox Martin are buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. A house did exist on this lot in 1894 when Ella T. Martin bought the property from William H. Tracy. A structure appears as early as 1891, according to the 1Sanborn Fire Insurance Co. maps. Sometime before 1927, this house was removed or torn down and John M. Railey built a new house on the lot between 1927 and 1943. On April 11, 1899, Lucille Callaghan purchased the property. Lucille Bridget (Monroe) Callaghan was born on November 12, 1860 in Pennsylvania (Ancestry.com 2001). Lucille married Charles Callaghan on May 1, 1883 in Gallatin County, MT (Ancestry.com 2017). Charles Callaghan had been born in Joliet, Illinois on April 22, 1850. In his youth he headed west, working for a few years in the construction department of the Union Pacific at Omaha, Nebraska. In 1870, he made his way to Utah where he stayed for two or three years. After living in Utah, he came to Montana to mine in Silver Star for a time. After the mines played out, he returned to the Midwest, yet in 1880 came back to Montana via the Missouri River. He lived in Three Forks, MT for many years. He drove the stage between Three Forks and Helena for two years and then worked in railroad and highway contracting. In 1895 he decided to farm in the Gallatin valley. In 1910, he retired from the farm and moved into Bozeman, MT (The Independent-Record 20 Jul 1934). In 1934, Lucille died after a lingering illness. She had become seriously ill when she dislocated a shoulder while dressing. She had lived in Gallatin County since c. 1884 and in Bozeman since c. 1899 (The Independent-Record 16 Jan 1934). On September 11, 1920, Elvera S. Railey purchased the property. On May 5, 1926, Elvera sold the property to her husband, John M. Railey. John M. Railey had been born on August 14, 1886. He later owned and operated a sand and gravel company near Belgrade, MT for many years (Great Falls Tribune 4 Aug 1963). John Railey had married Elvera “Elvira” S. Falbria in Bozeman on August 18, 1907. Elvira was born on November 14, 1886 in Sweden and died on July 9, 1948. John later married Agnes Ocenas Waggonhoffer. He moved to California in approximately 1952 (Times-Advocate 02 Aug 1963). He died in Escondido, CA on August 1, 1963. On March 27, 1964, Irving Waddy Street purchased the property. Irving Street was born February 24, 1895 in Belgrade, MT. He attended rural schools and graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1914. Irving was a Navy veteran of WWI, a member of the American Legion Post 14, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Gallatin Masonic Lodge No. 18. After the war, he returned to Bozeman for a short time, but moved to Livingston, where he owned and operated Pete’s Tire Shop. In 1928, he moved back to Bozeman and operated Street’s Service Station until 1942. On March 3, 1941, Irving Street married Carrie Hupka in Butte, MT (The Montana Standard 23 Jun 1966). Carrie Hupka Street was born on January 3, 1903 in Lake Andes, South Dakota to Joseph and Josephine Hupka. When she was 15 years old she moved to Clarkston, SD and attended school in Logan, SD (The Billings Gazette 28 Feb 1986). Before purchasing the property, Irving was working as Foreman at the Montana Flour Mills. He retired in 1960 and died on June 22, 1966. Carrie Street died on February 26, 1986 (Findagrave.com 2004). Both Carrie and Irving Street are buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. After Carrie Street’s death, the property was sold to William Joseph Harris on June 10, 1986. Various people have owned the property since Harris’ purchase in 1986. The current owner as of 2019 is Mary Ann Kraske. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. The site is in good condition overall, and Metcalf finds that they retain sufficient integrity to convey their historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s development, representative of a transitional period in residential design influenced by Progressive ideology (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 9 Integrity Property Name: 507 & 509 W LAMME ST Site Number: 054 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition, overall. The asbestos siding, however, covers the original horizontal clapboard. The basement entrance is also not original, but the basement windows are historic, thus affecting the integrity of materials and design. All of the other aspects have been retained. Metcalf finds that both structures retain sufficient integrity to convey their historic character.
