ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify:
Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling
Architect: unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: unknown
Builder/Contractor: unknown Company/City/State: unknown
Source of Information: N/A
This site consists of two historical architectural features: a single-story wood-framed Craftsman bungalow built in c. 1915 and a
single-stall detached garage built slightly later. The house has a rectangular footprint with a concrete foundation. The has a gable-front
roof clad in T-lock asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal clapboards, and most windows present are one-over-one
double-hung windows, with modern vinyl sash.
The primary façade faces south onto W. Lamme St. The entry is contained within a raised front porch which spans nearly the entire
façade. The porch is only slightly offset, and has a nested gable roof, supported by two tapered wood posts. The eaves of the porch
roof have decorative brackets, as well. There is a flight of concrete steps that lead up to the front porch, east of center. The door itself
is at the east end of the façade and is a side-hung steel paneled door with a fixed lite. To the west of the door is a bank of three one-
over-one-lite windows.
The east elevation of the house has a central box bay that projects slightly, containing a bank of three one-over-one-lite windows. To
the south of the bay is a pair of one-over-one-lite windows and, to the north, is another one-over-one-lite window. The west elevation
is like the east, in that it too has a projecting square bay. The bay contains a pair of one-over-one-lite windows. To the south of the bay
is a single-lite window at shoulder height. To the north is a smaller casement window. Basement sliding windows are present on both
the east and west elevations. The north elevation was partially obscured from view but contains a two-lite sliding window in the apex
of the gable and a centered side-hung secondary entry.
To the northeast of the house is a single-stall garage, accessed by a narrow driveway that skirts the east side of the house. The garage
is wood-framed with a gable-front roof. The walls are clad in clapboard siding and the roof is shingled with asphalt. Rafter tails are
exposed on the east and west elevations. The primary entry to the garage is on the south gable end and consists of a pair of side-hung
paneled wood doors. Both doors have a single fixed lite. Above the doors is a horizontal overhang, sheltering the opening. The garage
has been expanded to the west with a shed-roofed addition. This addition is not clearly visible from the public ROW.
This site is in excellent condition. Mature deciduous trees are at the rear of the property and within the boulevard to the south.
The site was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was considered a “neutral element within a
potential historic district.” Few changes have occurred since the previous recording and are limited to the replacement of original
windows with modern sash. However, the replacement was done with windows of a similar style and function and detracts very little
from the overall historic character. Metcalf finds it retains integrity.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 503 W LAMME ST Site Number: 052
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District
NRHP Criteria: A B C D

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
This site was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was recommended a “contributing
element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s
historic/architectural development.” Some changes have been made to the site since that time, including the addition of a large dormer
on the east elevation. Regardless, Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has historic associations with affluent Bozeman residents. However, these associations have
not been found to have significance. The site has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The
site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential historic
district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the
Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008).
Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
Few changes have occurred to the property since the previous recording. The original windows would have been wood double-hung
windows. Their replacement with modern vinyl sash affects integrity of materials to some degree. However, the replacement windows
are of a similar style and operate the same way, detracting very little from the site’s historic character. The garage has been expanded
to the east with a shed-roofed addition. However, this secondary structure is not readily visible and the alteration has had little affect
on integrity of design and feeling of the site overall. Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
