The house is wood-framed and stands on a concrete foundation. It has an L-shaped plan that includes an attached single-stall garage that comprises the south half of the structure, as well as a low-pitched, hip-roofed rear wing that extends west. The roof is hipped and covered in asphalt shingles, with overhanging eaves. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding. The primary façade faces east onto 6th Ave, and the primary entrance to the house is located near center on the east façade, within a recessed bay accessed by a flight of concrete steps with metal railings. To the north, there is a large fixed picture window with operable side lites. To the south of the entry is a sectional garage door with three fixed windows. Additional windows on the south and north elevations were able to be seen from the public ROW. These include fixed-lite wood windows and paired metal or vinyl two-lite sliding windows. The west elevation, partially visible from the alleyway to the west of the property, includes two-lite sliding windows and a shed-roofed wood deck. The site is well maintained. Mature coniferous trees shade the backyard, which is bounded on three sides by a wood fence. A mature deciduous tree is also located on the front lawn, near the driveway and in front of the primary entrance. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred. The site is in excellent condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 423 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 015 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Nick and Philipine “Phyl” (Volk) Schmidt moved to Bozeman in 1960, and purchased this property from Emil and Adeline Martel. They moved into the recently constructed single-family dwelling at 423 N 6th Ave. in approximately 1962. They lived at this location until they moved briefly to Billings in 1970. Nick died in Billings in 1972 (The Billings Gazette 10/26/1972). Phyl returned to Bozeman and continued to live at 423 N 6th Ave. until approximately 2001. The Schmidt family owned and operated the Bozeman Dairy Queen, sometimes referred to as Schmidt’s Dairy Queen from 1960 to 1970. Phyl was born in Berwick, North Dakota on July 20, 1917. She spoke German and English. Nick and Phyl were married September 20, 1937 in Fulda, MD. They had 13 children between 1938 and 1959. Phyl died in Bozeman on March 4, 2015 (Dahl Cares). Phyl and Nick Schmidt are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Phyl sold the property to Jerry and Joyce Ann Schmidt, the current owners, in 2001 (Table 1). Table 1. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. There appear to be no changes since the previous survey. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential. It has seen few modifications, primarily the replacement of some original windows. Original openings appear to be intact. Overall, the site retains integrity of materials, design, feeling, location, workmanship, setting, and association sufficient to convey historic character.
