The house is a wood-framed, single-story structure with characteristics of the Minimal Traditional style typical of mid-century housing developments. It has an L-shaped plan, with a concrete foundation. At the north end is a gable-front ell on what was originally an attached single-stall garage. It has since been converted to a master bedroom—a change made c. 1980, according to the current owner. The house has a gable-L roof covered in corrugated metal sheets. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding, with vertical composition board around the front door and in the apex of the gable-front ell. The primary façade faces west, onto N. 6th Ave. The entry consists of a standard door within a slightly recessed central bay. The door is offset, to the north, and is accessed by a flight of steps. To the south of the door is a bank of casement windows. There is a metal- framed, three-sided bay window centered on the gable-front ell. Additional casement and sliding windows are found on the façade and secondary elevations. Most of the original windows appear to have been replaced, but the window openings are intact. The concrete apron that once formed the driveway that accessed the attached garage remains intact, and is used as off-street parking. Views of the north and south elevations were partially obscured from the public ROW by vegetation. The rear (east) elevation was not observed during the course of inventory. The site is well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes a large deciduous tree on the southern half of the manicured lawn, and a row of large deciduous bushes boarding the northern edge of the property. The backyard appears to have a large mature deciduous tree in the southeast corner of the property. The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. The site is in good condition overall, but due to the remodel it does not retain sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 420 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 014 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of this house, the property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall (Phillips 2016). It was platted as the Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941 (Table 1). Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Lena died on August of 1941 and is buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple were married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC) which became Montana State University from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 (The Billings Gazette 7/18/1956) and Ina died in 1972. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Emil and Adeline Martel purchased this property in 1961. Emil Martel was born in Friedenstal, Ukraine, a son of Johann and Karoline Junker Martel. Emil grew up in the Ukraine, marrying Adeline Losing in 1934. During WWII they were evacuated to Germany and remained there until 1951 when they immigrated to the United States. They settled first in Baker, MT and then moved to Bozeman, MT in 1956. Adeline was born on April 20, 1915 in Makarowa, Ukraine to Jakob and Lydia Singer Losing. Adeline and Emil were married on December 13, 1934 in Birsula, Ukraine. Emil died in 1988 and Adeline died in 2004. They are buried together at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Martel Construction (William Martel, personal communication, 2019), erected a house on this property and it was sold to Arnold and Ann Jeannette Van Dyke (Table 2). Arnold and Ann Van Dyke lived there until 1969 (R.L. Polk & Co.). By 1971, the residence had been converted into two rental units with numerous people occupying the property until present (R.L. Polk 1941-2010). Table 1. Chain of Title, 420 N 6th Ave, Bozeman, Montana. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Statement of Significance Property Name: 420 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 014 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. There appear to be no changes since this previous survey, although the original survey does state that design and materials have changed since its original construction. The site is in good condition overall, but due to the notable alteration of the original attached garage, Metcalf finds that it does not retain sufficient integrity to convey historic character. The site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. It is found to lack integrity sufficient to convey historic character in reference to association with events that have made contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A and Criterion C. The site lacks direct association with persons of historical significance under Criterion B. Under Criterion D, the site is not likely to yield information that would contribute significantly to our understanding of the past. On the basis of loss of historic integrity, this site is no longer a strong representative example of the Minimal Traditional housing seen throughout central Bozeman, characteristic of the post-war housing boom. In consideration of the potential of a historic district within the 1941 Violett Addition, Metcalf recommends this site a non-contributing resource. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 420 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 014 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition, overall. It retains some aspects of integrity, but materials, design, feeling, and association have been affected by the remodeled and converted garage, as well as by the newer materials used for the roof and exterior walls. Metcalf finds it does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
