The house has a roughly rectangular footprint with a concrete foundation. The house has an attached garage at the south end. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood siding with vertical particle board in the apex of the gable ends. The roof is side gabled and clad with asphalt shingles. There is a slightly projecting gable-front bay on the east façade, with a brick veneer. This is the primary façade, though the main entry to the house is located on the south wall of the projecting gabled bay. The door is accessed by a flight of concrete steps with a brick-faced cheek wall. There is a large picture window centered on the gable bay, flanked by single-lite casements. Another fixed window with casement side lites is to the south of the gable-front bay. Further south is the attached single-stall garage with a paneled sectional garage door. The north end of the east façade has a two-lite sliding window. Two-lite basement windows are also present. Shoulder-height rectangular windows are located on the south gable end of the garage. Sliding windows are present on the north elevation. The west elevation was not visible from the public Right-of-Way. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred. The site is in excellent condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 417 N 6th Ave Site Number: 013 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the residence, this property was owned by Bozeman pioneer, carpenter, architect, and farmer William Beall (Phillips 2016). Beall filed two separate 160-acre homestead patents in the vicinity of Bozeman in the 1870s, some of which was divided into early City additions. This particular parcel was platted as the Violett Addition by subsequent owners Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941 (see Table 1). Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years, and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Lena died in August of 1941 and is buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple was married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. According to the reference librarian at the Montana State University Special Collections, Harvey taught Agricultural Engineering at what was then Montana State College, from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 (The Billings Gazette 7/18/1956) and Ina died in 1972. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). German immigrants Emil and Adeline Martel purchased this property in 1961. Emil and his son, William, had formed Martel Construction in 1960. They built this house along with many others in the surrounding area (William Martel, personal communication 2019). The cost of construction was estimated at $18,000 (City of Bozeman Building Division 1961). The site’s first occupants were Barbara and Jacob Hauf, who purchased this property with the newly constructed single-family dwelling in 1962. Barbara Judith (Edwards) Hauf was born November 27, 1926 to Lee Nichols Edwards and Blanche Rosamond (Burdan) Edwards in Forsyth, MT. She met Jacob “Jake” Hauf who worked as an orderly at the Neuropsychiatric Veterans Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming. Barbara and Jake were married June 5, 1946, and moved to his farm outside of Ranchester, Wyoming. Judy and Jake moved to Bozeman in the early 1960s, where Barbara obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1961 and a master's degree in nursing in 1962 at Montana State University (MSU). From 1962 through 1977 she was a member of the MSU College of Nursing faculty in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Barbara died July 7, 2017 and is buried in Sheridan, WY (Missoulian 2017). Jacob “Jake” Hauf was born January 13, 1919 to Jacob and Katerine (Bauer) Hauf in Nisland, South Dakota. After moving to Bozeman, Jake purchased Bozeman Granite Works. He was good at this work and enjoyed it, and then in 1977 he and Barbara moved to San Antonio, Texas. Jake died March 9, 2005 and is buried in Sheridan, WY (Find A Grave 2004; Missoulian 2005). Klaas and Jerita (Broekema) Andriesen purchased the property on August 16, 1977. Klaas was born in Shepherd, MT on October 12, 1923 to Oner and Cornelia (Straatsma) Andriesen. Klaas joined the Army the day after he graduated from Billings High School and served during WWII in the South Pacific. After military service, Klaas met Jerita in Bozeman and they were married in Bozeman on August 19, 1947. Klaas and Jerita farmed in the Three Forks area for a time, but Klaas was eventually employed by Van Dyken Drilling. Klaas Andriesen bought the business in 1976 and ran it with his son-in-law, Bernie Westra. He and Jerita purchased the Drilling Co with Bernie and Myra Westra. Klaas died February 13, 2012 and is buried in Churchill Cemetery in Churchill, MT (Find a Grave, 2004). Under the Andriesens’ ownership, a utility storage space was added to the house (City of Bozeman Building Division 1977). Michael D. and Laurel D. Duran purchased the property in 1990. In 1997 the Duran’s sold the property to James D and Nikki Lytle who are the current owners in 2019. In 2001, the Lytles began converting the single-unit dwelling to a duplex, remodeling the framework and installing egress windows. Work was completed in 2003 (City of Bozeman Building Division 2003). MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Statement of Significance Property Name: 417 N 6th Ave Site Number: 013 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. There appear to be no significant changes since this previous survey. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Integrity Property Name: 417 N 6th Ave Site Number: 013 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) Bricks that make up the veneer on the east façade show damage, particularly on the steps leading to the primary entrance. This has a minor affect on integrity of materials. Some windows may have been replaced with modern sash, but window openings are intact. New framing was installed between 2001 and 2003 during a remodel that converted the interior to a duplex. However, these alterations have had very little affect on the building’s outward appearance. Overall, the site is in excellent condition and retains integrity sufficient to convey historic character..
