It has an L-shaped plan with an attached garage. The roof is cross-gabled and covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in vinyl siding, with vertical particle board in the apex of the gables. The primary façade faces west, and is asymmetrical with a gable front on the north end and a set-back single-stall attached garage comprising the south half. The main entrance is on the south wall of the gable-front wing, within a recessed entry. The recessed entry has vertically-grooved vinyl siding and contains a large picture window. The entry is above grade, with a concrete stoop bordered by a brick planter. The single-stall garage to the south of the recessed entry has a paneled sectional door facing west. A variety of window types are present throughout the structure, and include fixed single-lite and sliding windows. The original windows and openings appear to be intact. The site is in good condition, overall. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred; the asphalt roof has been replaced at least once, based on the asbestos shingles described in this older survey. The site is in excellent condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the residence, this property was purchased and owned by Bozeman pioneer, carpenter, architect, and farmer William Beall (Phillips 2016). It was platted as the Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941 (Tables 1 and 2). Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Lena died on August of 1941 and is buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple was married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. According to the reference librarian at the Montana State University Special Collections, Harvey taught Agricultural Engineering at what was then Montana State College, from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 (The Billings Gazette 7/18/1956) and Ina died in 1972. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). In March of 1960 Emil and Adeline Martel purchased the property in two deeds of sale from Dorothy Gardner and from Charles and Anna Vanderzee. These purchases included Lots 12, 13, & 14 in Block 4 of the Violett Addition. Emil Martel was born in Friedenstal, Ukraine, a son of Johann and Karoline Junker Martel. Emil grew up in the Ukraine, marrying Adeline Losing in 1934. During WWII they were evacuated to Germany and remained there until 1951 when they immigrated to the United States. They settled first in Baker, MT and then moved to Bozeman, MT in 1956. Adeline was born on April 20, 1915 in Makarowa, Ukraine to Jakob and Lydia Singer Losing. Adeline and Emil were married on December 13, 1934 in Birsula, Ukraine. Emil died in 1988 and Adeline died in 2004. They are buried together at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. In December of 1960 Emil and Adeline sold the property to their son and his wife, William and Dorothy Martel (Table 3). William Martel constructed a house on the property (William Martel, personal communication, 2019) which became his residence. William Martel spent his career in the family construction businesses – Emil Martel and Son and Martel Construction Inc. William and Dorothy Martel lived in the home until 1975 when they sold it to Keith and Ellen Koslofsky (Gallatin County Deed Film 28/218). The Koslofskys owned the property until 2014 (Gallatin County Deed #2495612) when they sold the property to the current owner, N 6TH LLC. Table 1. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Statement of Significance Property Name: 414 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 012 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. There appear to be no changes since this previous survey. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Integrity Property Name: 414 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 012 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition. Few changes have been made to the property, with the exception of the installation of vinyl siding which affects integrity of materials only. Other aspects of integrity are retained, sufficient to convey historic character.
