The house is a wood framed, single-story Ranch style structure. It has an L-shaped plan, with a concrete foundation. The house has a hipped roof with a hipped wing projecting east, from the north end of the house. The roof is covered with asphalt shingles, and has boxed eves. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal composition board with a brick veneer in the recessed central bay on the primary façade. The primary façade faces east onto 6th Ave. The main entry is on the south wall of the projecting north bay, and the front door is accessed by concrete steps with a corrugated metal retaining wall/planter facing the street. The original windows and openings appear to be intact. The windows consist of fixed picture windows with side casements, sliding basement lites, and fixed garage windows. There is an attached single stall garage that comprises the south end of the house. At grade, there is an entry on the east façade for garage access. The garage door is original, and is a wood paneled sectional door with fixed plastic window lites. The site is well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes a manicured lawn, shaped coniferous bushes along the front façade and in the front portion of the yard by the driveway, and a large mature coniferous tree on the south side of the driveway. Mature coniferous trees are located in the backyard, to the west of the house. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred; the asphalt roof has been replaced at least once, based on the asbestos shingles described in this older survey. The site is in excellent condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 411 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 011 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the residence, this property was purchased and owned by Bozeman pioneer, carpenter, architect, and farmer William Beall (Phillips 2016). It was platted as The Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941 (see Table 1). Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland OR. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Lena died on August of 1941 and is buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple was married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. According to the reference librarian at the Montana State University Special Collections, Harvey taught Agricultural Engineering at what was then Montana State College, from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 (The Billings Gazette 7/18/1956) and Ina died in 1972. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004). The property was originally constructed by Emil Martel in 1961 as a single-family dwelling. According to the initial building permit, the estimated cost of construction was $15,000. In 1963, additional construction was completed, improving the basement at a cost of $1,000 (City Building Division 1961, 1963). A Merlyn O. Gunsch lived in the residence in 1964 to 1965. He is listed in the City Directory as being a “research worker” for Montana State College. The house was owned at this time by his mother and father, Otto and Rose Marie Gunsch. He was born August 6, 1936 in Bismarck, North Dakota. He studied chemistry at the graduate level at Montana State University. He went on to operate the Rexall Drug Store in Malta, MT and the Seeley Lake Pharmacy in Seeley Lake, MT. He later worked for the Indian Health Service, from which he retired in 2000. He died in November 12, 2017 and is buried in the Lewistown City Cemetery in Lewistown, MT (The Bismarck Tribune 11/21/2017). In 1964, Gabin and Pauline (Wienmeister) Wagner purchased 411 N. 6th and resided there from 1964 until their deaths. Gabin was born February 26, 1909 in Tabor, Bon Homme County, South Dakota. He died in Bozeman, MT February 8, 1993 at age 83. Pauline was born June 10, 1912 and died December 16, 2006 at the age of 94. They are both buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Gabin and Pauline married January 8, 1952 in Nashua, Montana. Gabin and Pauline’s daughter Rose Marie Wagner-Cain was deeded the property on January 8, 2007 and is the current owner of the property in 2019. Rose and James Cain became residents of the property in 1998. (R.L. Polk 1998) Table 1. Chain of Title, [411 N 6th Ave], Bozeman, Montana. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Statement of Significance Property Name: 411 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 011 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. There appear to be no changes since this previous survey. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 411 N 6TH AVE Site Number: 011 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall. There is minor affect to the integrity of material because of the planter along the front steps, which has been covered in a modern material not consistent with the original style of the house and its exterior treatment. It was likely originally brick to match the veneer on the east façade. No major alterations appear to have been made to the house and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
