This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in 1951. The house is a wood-framed, single-story structure
with characteristics of the Minimal Traditional style typical of mid-century housing developments. It has a rectangular plan, with a
concrete foundation. The house has a hip roof clad in asphalt shingles, and has overhanging eves. The exterior walls are clad in
horizontal wood siding, and the main entry is off center within a centered gable over a front bay extension on the east façade.
The primary façade faces east, onto 5th Ave. The front door is original, with a round lite, and is accessed by concrete steps. Most
original windows and openings appear to be intact, and appear to be fixed, casement and double-hung windows. The front gabled
façade has a large picture window just south of the front entry, and has a column of five square panes on either side.
There is a single-stall attached garage at the southwest corner of the house. The garage has a flat roof, and a door between the car stall
door and the house. A modern barn roofed shed can be seen in the backyard from the public ROW.
The site is well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes a large mature deciduous tree on the northern half of the manicured
lawn, and small flowers and bushes along the front façade on either side of the front entryway. Mature deciduous and coniferous trees
are located in the northwest corner of the backyard.
According to the owner the house was constructed C. 1962, and this street was once known as Dutch Row because of the ethnicity of
most of the residents and the proximity of the Dutch church on Fifth Street.
The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the
fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic
district.” Since then, the property has come of age. The site is in excellent condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey
historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 423 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 008
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prior to construction of the residence, this property was purchased and owned by Bozeman pioneer, carpenter, architect, and farmer
William Beall (Phillips 2016). It was platted as the Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock and Ina I. Murdock on
May 12, 1941 (Table 1).
Lena Border was born on September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, MT. On August 12, 1883, Lena married
Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years, after which they moved into Bozeman where they lived until
Henry’s death in 1929. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with
her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland, OR. Lena died in August 1941 and was buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery
in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota.
The couple was married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC) - which became
Montana State University in 1965 - from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July 1956 (The Billings Gazette 18 July 1956)
and Ina died in 1972. They were buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
Harry Van Dyken purchased the lot on June 20, 1941 yet did not submit a building permit application until September 25, 1950. The
application was for construction of a dwelling and attached garage on this property (City of Bozeman 1950).
In 1954, Harry and Lavina (Broekema) Van Dyken moved into a newly constructed single-family residence on the property. They
lived in the house jointly until approximately 1973. Lavina had been born on August 11, 1893 in Montana. She died on December 23,
1976. Harry had been born on October 1, 1899 in the Netherlands. Harry registered for both the WWI and WWII drafts. Harry and
Lavina started Van Dyken Drilling Co. in 1930. Harry retired in 1966 and his son Bert took over the business. Harry and Lavina were
both buried in the Churchill Cemetery in Churchill, MT.
Hilbrand and Stientje DeHaan purchased the property in 1977 and lived in the house until their deaths in 1998 and 1982, respectively.
(Findagrave.com 2004). Hilbrand had been born on January 8, 1913 in Spijke, Netherlands. Stientje immigrated to the United States
on May 30, 1947 through New York, NY. She became a naturalized citizen on April 20, 1953. Hilbrand and Stientje DeHaan were
buried together at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Belgrade, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
The property transferred to Nancy DeHaan on April 26, 1999 and she is the current owner as of 2019.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold
for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the
property has come of age. There appear to be no changes since this previous survey, although the original survey does state that design
and materials have changed since its original construction.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district
composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar
Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered
Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted
regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential.
