MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 211 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 001 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Minimal Traditional Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built between 1960 and 961. The house is a wood framed, single-story structure with characteristics of the Minimal Traditional style typical of mid-century housing development. It has a rectangular plan, with a concrete foundation. The house has a side gabled roof covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior is clad in asbestos shingles. The primary facade faces east, with the front door centered on the east facade, accessed by concrete steps. The door is original wood door with three rectangular fixed lites, and modern metal and glass storm door in front. The entry is contained beneath a gabled awning, which is supported by wood brackets and two wood posts. A brick chimney is located on the north gable end of the roof. Some of the original windows have been replaced, while others are intact and consist of aluminum storm windows over horizontally divided four lite windows. A shed roofed portico covers the driveway along the north elevation and is supported by metal posts. There is no garage, but there is a small prefab shed. Overall, the site is in good condition. Vegetation in the front and visible side yards is well maintained, and include a manicured lawn, small flower bushes along the east façade on either side of the front entryway, and deciduous bushes growing along the south façade of the house. A mature deciduous tree is in the northern section of the front lawn, and other deciduous trees are in the backyard, to the west of the house. The property was first recorded in August of 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred; the asphalt roof has been replaced at least once, and the once clapboard and manmade shingle siding (mentioned in McDonald’s report) is now asbestos shingle siding. The site is in good condition overall, and it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 211 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 001 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property is within Tracy’s 3rd Addition which was platted on May 16, 1883 by William H. Tracy. Before 1960, this property functioned as back lots for houses that were constructed on the S 110’ of Lots 1 – 3, Block E, fronting on W. Lamme Street, and pieces of it were bought and sold in various configurations along with those lots. A single-family residence was built on the property in 1960 or 1961. The first occupants were James and Molly Pratt. Molly (Arnold) Pratt had been born on July 13, 1923 in Bozeman, Montana. She attended Bozeman public schools and then attended Montana State College (MSC). She married James Pratt on December 25, 1947. Molly worked as a book buyer for Phillips Book Store for eleven years and as a librarian for the Bozeman Public Library for thirty-five years. Molly died in October 2015. James had been born on August 24, 1916 in Roundup, Montana (Findagrave.com, 2004). James was first a driver and then a salesman for Continental Oil in Bozeman. He also worked for Forrest Kilbride and Rutlidge Distributing (R.L. Polk and Company, 1950 to 1993). He died on May 5, 2001. James and Molly were buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com, 2004; Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 17 October 2015). Molly Pratt sold the property to Norma Wallace in 2006. Norma Wallace had been born in Newton, Kansas on July 24, 1921 to Christian Kliewer and Arpa Schmidt. She graduated from Newton High School and then attended Bethel College for two years. The family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma during WWII where Norma worked for an oil speculator and then for Douglas Aircraft. That is where she met her husband, Lt. Lew Wallace. They were married in Tampa, Florida. Lew was sent to England and was shot down on his second mission over Germany in September 1944. He spent nine months as a prisoner of war but then returned to the United States. They came to Montana in 1955. Lew worked for the USDA while in Bozeman. They retired to Lakeside, Montana. Lew died in 2006. Norma came back to Bozeman at that time and purchased this property at 211 North Fifth Avenue. Norma died on August 29, 2016 in Bozeman, Montana at the Highgate Sr. Living facility (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 2 September 2016). After Norma’s death the property was sold to Bradley S. and Danielle C. Tainer, who are the current owners as of October 2019. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Statement of Significance Property Name: 211 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 001 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty- year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred. The site is in good condition overall, and it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing of potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the earliest expressions of what is now considered Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 211 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 001 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition, overall. There are some damaged cracked asbestos shingles, and the picture window may have been modified. These aspects affect integrity of materials only. No major alterations appear to have been made to the house and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
