Hello Commission, I'm writing in regard to the Emerson's "AlpenGlow" festival from 9/16. We welcome events at the
Emerson, but Emerson staff have been reluctant to engage with neighborhood residents regarding ways to address
and mitigate negative impacts, including sound levels, trash, and public urination/overnight camping. We are
requesting a more proactive and "good faith" effort to engage with neighborhood residents. Please see letter
attached. Thank you, Ben Crosby

Dear Commission,
I am writing in regard to the “AlpenGlow” music event hosted on the Emerson Lawn on Friday,
September 16th, 2022. My understanding is that this event was sponsored by the city and the
Emerson and served as a fundraiser for HRDC.
My questions for the commission are:
What is the city and the Emerson doing to engage with neighborhood residents before
and during large-scale events on the Emerson Lawn?
What strategies are in place to mitigate impacts on neighborhood residents, including
sound levels, trash, and public urination/intoxication?
My family’s experience of the 9/16/2022 AlpenGlow event was as follows:
We did not receive any notice (eg. a “heads up”) prior this event from either Emerson or
event staff
Our house started shaking on Friday around 2 pm at soundcheck and didn't stop until
around 10
My wife and I took turns holding our toddler as he cried in fear from the windows in his
room rattling.
Some event-goers urinated on our lawn as they were exiting the event
On Saturday morning I walked down 4th picking up beer cans and other trash on the
street. Festival attendees van camping on our block expelled “grey water” onto the
street.
When we brought our concerns to the Emerson Executive Director (Susan), she
brushed off our concerns and indicated that she did not believe that engaging with
neighbors was necessary before future events
We appreciate the Emerson as a community resource and are glad it is used as a venue for
community events, including concerts on the lawn.
We are requesting a reasonable and “good faith” effort from both the city and the Emerson staff
to engage either neighborhood residents as part of future event programming.
Sincerely,
Ben Crosby
