RE: Soil Corrosivity Testing – Six Range Condominiums
Bozeman, Montana
Dear Ms. Hermann:
Please find enclosed an electronic PDF copy of our soil corrosivity testing and DIPRA analysis for
the above-referenced project.
Based on typical water main depth (5.0 to 8.0 feet), the pipe will primarily run through sandy
gravel. The soils across the site were consistent, with shallow gravels extending to the bottom of
all boreholes. Trench backfill during water main installation will consist of native sandy gravel.
One composite sample was collected from across the site at typical water main depth for
corrosivity potential for ductile iron pipe. The composite sample consisted of sandy gravel and
was formed from the combination of split spoon samples from all ten boreholes across the site
at typical water main depth. The composite sample was tested by Energy Laboratories in Helena,
Montana for resistivity, sulfides, chlorides, oxidation-reduction potential, and pH. Based on
laboratory testing results, the composite sample was non-corrosive. Please refer to the
attached laboratory testing results for details.
According to the DIPRA Decision Model, the likelihood score is the deciding factor for most
projects regarding whether a soil is corrosive and to what extent corrosion protection is
recommended. Consequence scores (the second input to the decision matrix) must reach a
medium to high threshold value before they affect the corrosivity and protections assessment.
Since consequence scores are typically low, they usually have no effect, as in this case. For this
project, the composite sample scored a consequence score of 11.
Based on the DIPRA document, the use of V-Bio Enhanced Polyethylene Encasement is
recommended for corrosion protection for likelihood scores from 21 to 40. For scores of 41 or
greater, zinc-coated piping, or cathodic protection is recommended in addition to V-Bio
Enhanced Polyethylene Encasement. For this project, the composite sample scored a likelihood
score of 13.5, therefore no V-Bio Enhanced Polyethylene Encasement is required. Please refer to
the attached DIPRA Analysis for details.

Lab measurement of analytes considered field parameters that require analysis within 15 minutes of sampling such as pH, Dissolved Oxygen and Residual Chlorine, are qualified as being analyzed outside of recommended holding time.
Solid/soil samples are reported on a wet weight basis (as received) unless specifically indicated. If moisture corrected, data units are typically noted as –dry. For agricultural and mining soil parameters/characteristics, all samples are dried and ground prior to sample analysis.
Radiochemical precision results represent a 2-sigma Total Measurement Uncertainty.
