I am writing to request that the Bozeman City Commission keep the proposed property tax increase at or
below 3%. Any tax increase greater than 3% will have at least two seriously adverse consequences (as
follows):
First, any property tax increase greater than 3% will place an undue financial burden on long-term Bozeman
home owners who, like my wife and I, are retired and live on a moderate, fixed income. In other words, the
unintended consequence of a property tax increase greater than 3% will be that many Bozeman home
owners who live on moderate, fixed incomes will be forced to "sell up" and leave town.
Second, it is likely that landlords will pass on 100% of any property tax increase to their rental tenants,
many of whom can barely pay their rent now. In other words, the unintended consequence of a property
tax increase greater than 3% will be that more rental tenants will lose their current housing and perhaps
end up homeless and living on the streets of Bozeman.
