Hello Bozeman City Commission and Administration -
In January of 2022, the Gallatin County Commission awarded One ValleyCommunity Foundation $500,000 American Rescue Plan funds for the
purpose of reviving and sustaining nonprofit organizations that were
negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
These funds , essentially granted through One Valley by the County
Commission, ultimately were awarded to 18 nonprofit organizations
throughout our county in the Gallatin County Nonprofit Vitality Grant cycle
this past spring.
The County Commissioners, County staff, One Valley staff, and the
volunteer grant review team all were moved by the needs expressed in the
70 applications we received for these limited funds. The total amount offunding requested across those 70 eligible applications was $2.66 million.
Among the 52 applications denied along with the unfunded portions of the
partially awarded requests, needs totaling almost $2.2 million couldnot be met with the available funding.
In 2019, the nonprofit sector in Gallatin County generated just shy of a
billion dollars in income, about 10% of income generated by all nonprofitsstatewide. In that same year, nonprofits in Gallatin County employed
4,492 workers and paid them more than $180 million in wages
(www.mtnonprofit.org).
Please keep nonprofits top-of-mind for grant dollars, shouldcurrent or future federal, state, or local funding come available
that could be leveraged to sustain the diverse, essential and costly
services they provide to our community and its members.
Please review the attached outcomes and recommendations report that I
shared with the Gallatin County Commission and staff. I'll be sharing it
with other local governments and decision makers around the county.Should you be interested in more granular detail in the case that funding is
available, please reach out to me.
The ARPA dollars were an unexpected good fit for this type of community
investment, and it makes sense to broadly share the unmet needs of this
critical sector of our economy in case other funding is now or becomes
available over time. I am grateful for your ongoing partnership.
My best to each of you,

OUTCOMES
In early 2022, Gallatin County granted $500,000 in American
Rescue Plan Act funding through One Valley to Gallatin
County nonprofits to bolster resilience and recovery from the
pandemic.
Nonprofits perpetually struggle to raise unrestricted funds for
operational expenses. With staffing shortages, programmatic
closures, and increased needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
the need for unrestricted funding to revitalize and sustain
Gallatin County nonprofits has become critical. The Gallatin
County Nonprofit Vitality Grant has served to address some of
those needs.
The total number of grant applications submitted by eligible
Gallatin County nonprofits was 70. The total number of funding
requests across those applications was $2.66 million. Of those
eligible applications, 18 were awarded funds.
In January of 2021, the
Montana Nonprofit
Association released
its Montana Nonprofit
Economic Impact Report.
This report highlights
the nonprofit sector as
crucial economic drivers.
In 2019, the nonprofit sector in Gallatin
County generated just shy of a billion
dollars in income, about 10% of income
generated by all nonprofits statewide.
In 2019, nonprofits in Gallatin County
employed 4,492 workers and paid
them more than $180 million dollars in
wages.
OUTCOMES & RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR FUNDING UNMET NEEDS
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUNDING UNMET NEEDS
Among the 52 applications denied and the unfunded portions of the awarded requests, needs totaling
almost $2.2 million could not be met with the available funding.
The spectrum of services beyond employment provided across our area nonprofit community ranges
from workforce development and support, auxiliary or augmentative support to private sector services
like behavioral health, senior care, child development, public health, food security, tourism, poverty
disruption, recidivism prevention, and public education.
Currently available or future federal, state, or local funding is a significant need to bolster Gallatin
County’s nonprofit sector to sustain the essential and costly services they collectively provide to our
community members. One Valley Community Foundation strongly supports additional funding be
allocated to address unmet funding needs like those exposed by the Nonprofit Vitality Grant.
