Dear City Council members, I’ve been swimming several times a week at the Swim Center since 1989, when I had to give up running due to knee and low back issues. I have not been swimming since the Swim Center closed a few months ago. Bogert Pool is not lap swimmer friendly. Too short, too many swimmers, and WAAAAY too warm. I strongly encourage the City to pass a resolution to dedicate emergency funds to the Swim Center repair. There is a large group of adults such as myself who have given up swimming since the Swim Center closed. In the summer, finding alternative exercise is easy enough, but as any lap swimmer will tell you, swimming is a preferred routine exercise. It is non impact , aerobic and incorporates muscle stretching. Once winter arrives, alternative exercise forms have dangers (I am 63) not present with lap swimming. For at least 20 years, I have routinely commented that an annual Swim Center pass is the cheapest pass anywhere. A gym membership is 3 to 5 times higher. A single visit to a pool in another city is likely to be $10. I am not advocating to raise the pass rate fivefold, but I am expressing my opinion that the vast majority of your regular users know they are getting the deal of the century at the Swim Center. Those same swimmers spend far more on gas money getting to and from the Swim Center than on the fee to swim. Those of us who swim regularly are aware that population growth in the county has severely impacted the swimming experience. The valley has over 100,000 people and one public year round swim facility. That issue is for another time, but please stay ahead of it. Thank you for your consideration and please authorize the emergency funding! Sincerely, Steve Reida
