I am writing to add my voice to the many who are concerned, disappointed, frustrated, and stand instrong opposition to the proposed Fowler connection project. I fully support the arguments forpreserving the trees, the walking path, and the way of life for the residents in the area. Additionally,as a parent of children attending Hyalite Elementary, I want to draw attention to the many studentswho utilize this corridor to travel to and from school each day.
The proposed Fowler connection and accompanying intersections will create a dangerous crossing
for the 30+ children that pass through it each day. Too many drivers in Bozeman view driving as a
right, rather than a privilege and speed from one point to another with little regard for pedestrians.
I have witnessed drivers barreling through the flashing lights of the existing crosswalk on Babcock
and Sheridan when I walk with my children to school. Adult crossing guards have been hit by careless
drivers while wearing reflective gear, holding a large stop sign, and standing in the crosswalk with
lights flashing. Thankfully, no children have been hit (to my knowledge) but by inviting increased
traffic into the area and adding a roundabout or signal at Babcock and Fowler, I believe it is only a
matter of time before a child is hurt.
Roundabouts and multi lane intersections are too difficult and dangerous for children to cross.Flashing lights in a large roundabout are not enough to ensure the safety of the children who walkand bike to school every day. I can’t imagine that an understaffed school district will be able toprovide additional crossing guards to help children navigate an expanded intersection at Babcockand Fowler. Will it take an injury or death before the city realizes that bringing a high trafficconnector and expanded intersections into this area is a huge mistake?
The proposed Fowler connection is a bad fit for the location and the people that live in this area.
