Before school begins, I think traffic safety needs to be addressed particularly around GHS and Meadowlark.
There are accidents at the intersections of Oak and Ferguson and Oak and Flanders Mill frequently and my
concern is for the safety of the students/pedestrians in this town. We have had serious close calls crossing
Ferguson and I am afraid my concerns are not being taken seriously. I am trying to prevent a tragedy and
would like some help in regard to traffic calming in this area. Ideas: lowering the speed limit, putting up
signs to tell drivers not to pass or maybe improving the crosswalks like bringing the sidewalk out further to
prevent drivers from passing at crosswalks while pedestrians are crossing.
Below is a follow up to my email from June. Your attention to this matter is appreciated.
I am a concerned parent who lives in the area of Meadowlark, Gallatin HS and CJMS. A few weeks ago my
son was almost hit on Ferguson Ave. This is not the first time. The issue is when a car is stopped at the
crosswalk at Tanzanite and Ferguson cars have attempted to speed pass the stopped vehicle while children
are crossing. The two times I witnessed this I ran out to get the attention of my child so he would stop
crossing and the vehicle that almost hit him. Fortunately, both times the vehicle and my son stopped just in
time. I have contacted the police regarding the issue along with the school. I am urging you to consider
some traffic calming along Ferguson Ave and Oak. Both streets have high speed limits for the amount of
pedestrians that use these streets. Ferguson also has a park, Oak Springs, and is a highly residential area.
The amount of almost- close -calls with students is scary. My idea of traffic calming is to reduce the speeds
around this area or "no passing" signs may be helpful as cars will pass on the shoulder or the other lane for
cars that are stopping and or turning. Pedestrians are often crossing and in the shoulder making accidents
like this likely.
Additionally, my son who was almost hit but a reckless driver on 6/2 is also a swimmer. That day he was so
traumatized by the close-call with the car that he didn't want to leave the house. I was able to get him out
and to swim practice, which we now practice in the Lewis and Clark Hotel. After being at practice he was
himself again, happy and smiling. Please listen to the swim community and their concerns as this is a vital
part of the community.
