To Whom it May Concern,
I have lived and worked in Bozeman since 2016 and have always had a welcoming attitude about
new comers. I continue to feel that growth in a community is a good thing, however, I have been
saddened by the decisions of the town planners and commissioners. Decisions have not been based
on what the town needs which is clearly affordable housing for the people who work here, often for
minimum wage, young families, and the people working in service industries. Instead, our limited
resources of building materials, water supply, environmental impact and laborers to build are being
allocated to “luxury condo projects”. It appears decisions are being made based on greed rather
than need. Are the developers who are proposing these projects trying to help our community grow
or are they seeing this community as an opportunity to make a lot of money on wealthy people who
can afford a luxury condo in Bozeman as their vacation home? I moved to Bozeman from a Colorado
ski town that was full of huge second homes owned by wealthy people and the full time residents
that were the heart and soul of the town had to leave because the housing market was heavy on
“luxury homes and condos” and lacking modest, comfortable housing for middle income people. Is
that what we want in Bozeman? I hope the people who decide what, where, and when things are
built will think about the needs of the community and not the greed of those doing the developing. I
hope we can continue to attract people to this city that are good stewards of the environment and
care about the resources they use. I think maintaining the beauty of this part of Montana is
absolutely depended on bringing people here who care about the human impact on the
environment and the climate. The risk /benefit of allowing these “luxury” developments seems
unbalanced. The risk is increased pollution, decreased water, increased disparity. The benefit is more
wealth for the wealthy. Lets please try to regain balance in a dangerously unbalanced world.
Thank you for your consideration,
Erika Montgomery
