My name is Noah Brennan, and I have lived in Bozeman since I moved here for school in August of 2017 (go Cats!). I have profoundly enjoyed living in this beautiful city for the last half-decade. I am very conscious of the fact that this place, and a life therein, is a rarity. I am very grateful that I get to live here, as are many many others. I am however very concerned about how long I, and the ones I love, will be able to enjoy life here. My concern is largely due to the rising cost of living. This may be a broken record that you have been listening to ad nauseam, but I think that only highlights the importance of this issue. I hope I don’t lose the reader with the next paragraph; it is not my intent to point fingers or place blame. It is my intent to speak my piece for what it’s worth and leave you with it if you’ll have it. The rise in rent prices specifically is disgusting to me. As I mentioned before, I understand this place is rare. I understand that inflation is a real phenomenon with real consequences. I also understand that price of rent is a private business issue, not a concern of the city per se. However, it is absolutely the concern of the city to protect its image. Bozeman has gone from a reasonable town full of reasonable people to a cut- throat environment full of greedy assholes. I am sorry for the crude language, but I cannot think of a less offensive term that matches my observations. I won’t go into the statistics; I imagine you have access to all the information you need on this (if you don’t you should). The aforementioned rise in the price of rent is inhumane. The prices aren’t acceptable anywhere in my opinion, but that is beside the point. Rent in Bozeman should not be comparable to rent in New York or Los Angeles. It is absolutely insane, and if you disagree, you are either a psychopath by the medical definition or an incompetent human. I do not care how much money the city is getting through property tax, and I do not care how fast the city is growing; it cannot be worth the price of your humanity, and I simply cannot accept that the influx of people matches the subsequent rise in rent prices. I genuinely hope you are still reading. If you are, thank you. I want to also make it known that my parents paid my rent the last 5 years. I know I am lucky. Before you disregard my message on those grounds, please think about what it means that a privileged kid is upset enough to write an email. And after you are done laughing at the absurdity of the last sentence, please think about what the city can do to ameliorate the effects of these issues. I greatly appreciate your time, and I look forward to a response if you deem this email worthy of one. -Noah Brennan If you would like to submit additional documents (.pdf, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .gif, .jpg, .png, .rtf, .txt) along with your comment, you may alternately address agenda@bozeman.net directly to ensure receipt of all information.
