Subject: Statewide Functional Classification Review
In Spring 2021, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) began coordinating with all counties
and urban areas on proposed changes to the functional classification of roadways. The purpose of this
letter is to notify you that due to the complexities of the Statewide Functional Classification Review
project, MDT has determined there is a need to reevaluate the approach for the completion of the
project.
At this time, MDT will not be moving forward with proposing changes to current roadway functional
classifications. If you have already received documents from MDT including the proposed functional
classification changes and letter requesting local approval, please disregard these documents.
Once a new schedule for the completion of the project is established, the department will be in touch
to coordinate the next steps in this effort.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Geoff Streeter at (406)-444-9131 or by email at
gstreeter@mt.gov.
Thank you for your time.
