My wife and I live downtown in a new condo complex. We moved into it recently, moving from-----Bozeman! (Despite what you might hear, not everyone is moving downtown from California. In fact, in our building, The Merin, I have not yet met anyone from CA, but instead there are several residents from Montana and Bozeman who, like us wanted to downsize and live downtown. ) Based on our experience living out of the downtown core, and now living right next to City Hall, I believe that the "issue" of a lack of parking is a myth. The reality is whether we drove into town as we often did in the recent past, or now walk around town, we always find parking available, often on Main Street, and if not, the garage always has open parking slots. I believe one of the highest priorities of the city is to preserve the quality of downtown. There are many cities in Montana and across the country that have not so. Adding paid parking will hurt local businesses and really turn downtown in to just a destination for tourists, as locals will not come to town if they must pay for parking---and yes, locals do shop downtown! Paid parking for Main Street is a very ill conceived idea. Paid parking is a "solution" to a "problem" that does not exist, and a "solution" that will hurt the vitality of downtown Bozeman! Thank you for your consideration, Steven Enoch Ps- be careful also about approving developments that do not address parking--including the proposal to convert the firehouse to "affordable" housing, with parking provided in the public parking garage. If you are not familiar with parking for The Merin building, it consists of ground level parking, and a parking lift, which allows double the number of cars within the space. Come take a look at it---and require something similar for future developments.
