I live in Gallatin county and own a home in Bozeman. I strongly oppose reducing parking requirements in
Bozeman. It is extremely difficult to find a parking spot when going downtown to a restaurant or show.
There is no reason to allow developers to build housing without the required parking. It is a short term
solution that will cause long term pain.
Affordable housing should not be in the center of Bozeman on the most expensive real estate. I also oppose
offering affordable housing incentives. Tax payers should not have to pay developers for the privilege of
building in Bozeman!
Instead the city should consider giving a tax break for ADUs . ADUs have much lower rent than a single
family house. Also the city could rent AirBnBs or short term housing for people who are temporarily
homeless. It would be much less expensive than building tiny houses or apartments. Currently it costs
$500,000 to run the warming center for 5 months. That is $100k a month. If there are between 30 and 70
homeless each night that means that the city could pay private house owners up to $70 per night for the
use of their BnB or ADU. Bozeman needs to think of other alternatives to solve this issue. Encouraging
residents to rent out a room or an ADU is one way to house people. The city can pay people who have
trouble paying for their current home to have a "roommate", and the city should allow tax breaks for
having additional people live on your property.
