The following is the city of Bozeman’s HistoricPreservation Citizen Advisory Board’s (“HPAB”) recommendations on the matter. The Original Deaconess has tremendous cultural and historic significance for the residents ofBozeman, Montana. Starting in the early 1920s, the Original Deaconess was the only hospitalin Bozeman, and thus served as an important structure for all parts of human life: births, sickness, health, death, and healing. For decades, the Original Deaconess was thus importantto life in Bozeman. Notably, the building was designed by famed architect Fred F. Willson, who helped establish Bozeman’s architectural reputation through the iconic and varied designand styles, and fine craftsmanship of many buildings around town, including the Armory,Blackmore Apartments, YMCA, Emerson School, Gallatin County Jail (now history museum),and numerous buildings on the Montana State University campus, Soldiers Chapel in Big Skyand the famous Lake Lodge in Yellowstone National Park, America’s first national park!
Because of the importance of the Original Deaconess in the development of the city of
Bozeman and the building’s unique architecture, in 2014 it was considered historicallyimportant enough to be eligible for nomination on the National Register of Historic Places
according to the Montana Historic Property Record of 2014. Because of the OriginalDeaconess’ historic, cultural, and architectural importance to the past, present andfuture citizens of Bozeman, it deserves respect, preservation, and longevity.
The HPAB believes strongly that Bozeman must recognize and honor the historic and culturalsignificance of the Original Deaconess, and makes the following strong recommendations tothe City of Bozeman and the developer in any new structure: 1. Adaptive re-euse of salvageable, historic materials within the new structureincluding, but not limited to: brick, terracotta windows, window sills, head details, columns, and internal railings, decorative and structural elements, window and doorcornices, doors with decorative details in wood and metal2. HPAB believes that all efforts and care should be made to copy the look and feelof the Original Deaconess in the new structure in the following ways:a. Rebuild the façade with a mix of salvage materials and new materialsb. Or, as a last resort, replicate the façade of the Original Deaconess with newmaterials3. Honoring the historic significance of the building by:a. Documenting as much as possible about the Original Deaconess before anyfurther demolition occurs (including taking photos and creating detailedarchitectural plans of both the interior and exterior, HPAB recommends aHABS Level II documentation)b. Submitting all aforementioned documentation to a repository within thestate of Montana that grants free access to the public. HPAB recommendsMontana State University Library Special Collections in Bozeman because theyalready have records of the Original Deaconess dating back to 1913.c. Creating plaques and/or information panels that document the history andsignificance of the building where they can be easily seen within the newstructure
4. It is crucial to share the history of this important building as an
educational and cultural resource by supporting the creation of a film incollaboration with interested citizens of Bozeman of the Original DeaconessHospital.

Dear Interim Director Bently,
These comments are in response to the impending demolition of the Original Bozeman
Deaconess Hospital (“the Original Deaconess”) located at 15 West Lamme that was designed by
Fred Willson, a noted Bozeman architect. The following is the city of Bozeman’s Historic
Preservation Citizen Advisory Board’s (“HPAB”) recommendations on the matter.
The Original Deaconess has tremendous cultural and historic significance for the residents of
Bozeman, Montana. Starting in the early 1920s, the Original Deaconess was the only hospital in
Bozeman, and thus served as an important structure for all parts of human life: births, sickness,

numerous buildings on the Montana State University campus, Soldiers Chapel in Big Sky and
the famous Lake Lodge in Yellowstone National Park, America’s first national park!
Because of the importance of the Original Deaconess in the development of the city of Bozeman
and the building’s unique architecture, in 2014 it was considered historically important enough to
be eligible for nomination on the National Register of Historic Places according to the Montana
Historic Property Record of 2014. Because of the Original Deaconess’ historic, cultural,
and architectural importance to the past, present and future citizens of Bozeman, it
deserves respect, preservation, and longevity.
The HPAB believes strongly that Bozeman must recognize and honor the historic and cultural
significance of the Original Deaconess, and makes the following strong recommendations to the
City of Bozeman and the developer in any new structure:
1. Adaptive re-euse of salvageable, historic materials within the new structure including, but

2. HPAB believes that all efforts and care should be made to copy the look and feel of the
Original Deaconess in the new structure in the following ways:
a. Rebuild the façade with a mix of salvage materials and new materials
b. Or, as a last resort, replicate the façade of the Original Deaconess with new
materials
3. Honoring the historic significance of the building by:
a. Documenting as much as possible about the Original Deaconess before any
further demolition occurs (including taking photos and creating detailed

b. Submitting all aforementioned documentation to a repository within the state of
Montana that grants free access to the public. HPAB recommends Montana State
University Library Special Collections in Bozeman because they already have
records of the Original Deaconess dating back to 1913.
c. Creating plaques and/or information panels that document the history and
significance of the building where they can be easily seen within the new
structure
