As an owner of a small Main Street business, I am opposed to paid parking downtown. We often struggle to
get our local customers to come downtown even with free parking.
It appears that the primary driver of the parking shortage is the City's unwillingness to require new
buildings to include parking adequate for those buildings. If all new downtown buildings were required to
have the appropriate number of parking spaces (i.e. two per housing unit, one per hotel room), we would
not need to resort to charging fees that will further alienate our local Bozeman clientele.
Given that many buildings have already been constructed without providing appropriate parking, the City
needs to correct the shortage of spaces they've helped create. Construction of additional parking garages
would be a step in the right direction. Allowing continued construction of multifamily buildings without
adequate parking spaces is another step in the wrong direction.
