Dear folks,
Yesterday I wrote a letter about the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital on Lamme street, the
demolition of which I opposed. (Please reference that letter as it pertains to
neighborhoods) Today, I am once again writing about this zone change. I live on Lamme street,
and will be a part of this change. The house I live in is an historic house, registered in Helena,
and in the national archives, It is a landmark. And it is part of a mixed use
neighborhood. There are family dwellings as well as business enterprises; it is a happy
marriage. It gives flexibility to those individuals who live in this area to combine both business
and neighborhood, if they so chose. By this zone change, you are taking that choice and
putting the aspirations of developers in charge who would tear down and build bigger for big
profits. And the labor that is hired to do this construction, where do they live? In makeshift
trailers?
Right now, with your decisions you have not considered the people who have been
affected. You want to save the downtown, make it viable, but for whom? The tourist that
comes and goes, the trust fund babies that have money but will shop on line? Historically, It is
these neighborhoods close to Main Street that have kept the downtown viable, attended the
restaurants, the movie theaters, the stores, and held jobs essential to Bozeman's economy. In
an ironic twist, when the big box stores came in, we protested, wanting to save Main Street,
but money works more than ethics. And that is what is happening now. The Main street you
are trying to save is having trouble finding workers. Last summer, stores often closed because
they could not get help...Because of high rent and covid.
Say no to this Zone change. And please...Don't consider this zone change "progress." for it is
not. Not at all unless you find more creative ways to grow, and that takes time and thought,
and the collective wisdom of the folks who live in this town.
Sincerely,
Jo Anne Troxel
