As a former parking commissioner I raised the issue of changes that have occurred in the High School
Parking District. This district was formed about 15 years ago when overflow parking from the high school
plagued many local residents and some businesses. With the doubling of the parking lot at Bozeman High
about 5 years ago, and now the opening of Gallatin High, students no longer flood into this neighborhood
to park, at least not on the streets south of Main Street. So the district needs modification.
As a commissioner I repeatedly requested a study of this issue, noticing that this district is now far too large
to serve its original purpose. Then the pandemic hit, and the issue got dropped in spite of promises from
the parking program manager at the time to pursue traffic counts and a check on how many residents
south of Main actually buy permits. Please direct city staff to investigate this issue as we have empty streets
in the district and crowded streets adjoining it to the south. To continue conducting this district with the
inclusion of the streets south of Main is a waste or resources (empty streets) and staff time (enforcement).
