Architectural Description
Property Name: 135 E BABCOCK Site Number: 131
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other If Other, specify: New Formalism Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Bank Drive Through Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown
Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information:
This site consists of one architectural feature: a commercial bank drive through structure built ca. 1973 in the New Formalism style. According to the date from the Montana Cadastral Records, this structure is almost at the 50-year threshold to be considered as a
historic property. It was most likely built in association with the First National Bank of Bozeman, who occupied the bank building directly to the northwest (104 E Main St.). This building, at 135 E Babcock, is a single-story drive through bank outlet. The building has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The roof is flat with broad overhanging eaves. The exterior walls are clad in stucco with grouped tall, tinted windows on all sides. The only entry is on the east elevation and is a standard steel side hung door. A teller window is also on the east elevation. A
sizeable porte cochere extends east from this side of the building over four drive through lanes at the side of the building. The portico roof is supported at the far east end by two steel posts. The bank is in excellent condition and retains all aspects of integrity.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
This site is a bank drive-thru associated with U.S. Bank at 104 E Main (property 203). Montana Cadastral Records suggest the drive-thru was constructed in 1973, likely alongside a remodel of the U.S. Bank building which occurred from 1970 and 1973.
Originally known as the First National Bank of Bozeman, U.S. Bank took over the building at 104 E Main and drive-thru building on January 1, 1990 (usbanklocations.com). The U.S. Bank building is listed individually on the NRHP (24GA1895) and is a contributing building to the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). The drive-thru is within the boundaries of the Main Street Historic District, but does not fall within the period of significance and is considered non-contributing.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 135 E BABCOCK Site Number: 131
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
NRHP Listing Date:
NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District
NRHP Criteria: A B C D
Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 135 East Babcock Street was built ca. 1973 in the New Formalism style. The building has not yet reached the 50-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and does not currently meet Criteria Consideration G for properties that have gained exceptional importance within the past 50 years. Overall, the site is in excellent condition and serves as a strong representation of the period and style, but as Diana Painter notes in her Post-World War II Survey and Inventory, "there are a number of excellent examples of New Formalism in Montana. Such buildings should be included in a future survey, as these buildings, "come of age.‟ (Painter, 2010). Because of its excellent condition and retention of integrity, we recommend that it be revisited and reevaluated at a later date, when it has reached the 50-year threshold. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. It has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. It is located within the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952), but is as non-contributing element as it is not yet historic and therefore
falls outside the district’s period of significance. Metcalf finds the site is currently not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
