It was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, and was regarded as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district," that lacked historic integrity "due to change in original design and materials." McDonald described the house as follows: "This detached one-story single-family residence has an L-shaped plan with an enclosed shed-roofed front porch completing the 'square.' The front concrete stoop has no roof and there is an attached one-bay, flat-roofed garage. The frame construction is finished in asphalt shingles and sits on a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles and lies perpendicular to the street." Metcalf revisited the site in October 2020 and noted several modifications to the exterior. It is a one story wood framed house with an upright and wing form, and an attached single stall garage. The house has an irregular plan shape and a concrete foundation. The roof is a gable ell roof covered in asphalt shingles. There is a shed roofed enclosed front porch within the reentrant corner and the attached garage has a flat roof. The exterior walls are now clad in horizontal wood siding with cedar shingles in the gable front and across the enclosed front porch. The house faces east onto S Bozeman Ave. The main entry is within an enclosed porch projecting along the buildings side gabled wing. The entry is accessed by a wood deck with wood railings. Windows to either side of the door are three over one lite hung windows. Two additional three over one windows continue on the north wall of the porch. At the north end of the façade is a setback attached single stall garage with a pair of side hung brazed wood doors. At the south end of the façade is a gable front picture window with a fixed lite and four lites above. A louvered vent is in the gable apex. Two modern basement windows are also present on the east façade, one of which is a large egress window with a corrugated metal well. The north elevation has a stall two over two lite fixed window in the gable peak. The south elevation has a boxed bay at the rear, containing a large fixed window. A one over one lite window is also present but vegetation obscured a clear view of this elevation. Site is in excellent condition, overall. Some altered windows and new window openings affect the integrity of materials and design. Application of exterior materials inconsistent with the original design of the house (i.e. Craftsman shingles) has further affected integrity of design and feeling. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 113 S Bozeman Ave Site Number: 161 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property currently addressed as 113 South Bozeman Avenue was platted by Leander Black as Black’s Addition and was platted on October 31, 1872. Henrietta "Nettie" Taylor purchased this property which includes Lots 8 and 9, Block B, Black’s Addition and Fractional Lot 4, Guy’s Addition in two purchases, including one from John W. and Mary Tilton on August 20, 1890 and Edwin Toole on February 16, 1892. Henrietta Ray was born on July 14, 1850 to Thomas and May Ray in Pennsylvania (Ancestry.com, 2001). On June 20, 1882 she married Josiah Hopkins "J.H." Taylor in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2017). Josiah was born on November 20, 1834 in Madrid, NY. He came to Bozeman in 1866 and began working for his brother-in-law at the eponymous Charles Rich & Company, a general merchandise store. He was appointed census enumerator and Bozeman’s first postmaster in 1869. Taylor also acted as deputy U. S. marshal for several months and as deputy revenue collector. He worked as postmaster until 1882 when he went into the book and stationary business. He married Anges G. Gage on November 3, 1876, but she died in 1881. A little over a year later he married Henrietta Ray. Josiah died on March 21, 1901 and Henrietta died on May 20, 1916 (The Avant Courier, 23 March 1901; The Weekly Courier, 24 May 1916). This residence does not appear on the 1890 Sanborn Map but is on the 1891 Sanborn Map. Between 1891 and 1904 a one-story room and porch were added to the north side of the residence. The property went to Henrietta’s son, Louis Ray Taylor, and Mary Henrietta Ray, on April 4, 1916. Taylor and Ray sold the property to Arthur A. Allen on August 27, 1920. Arthur A. Allen was born in Fair Grove, MO on April 26, 1872 to James and Mary Allen. He came to Montana in 1896. He lived in Missoula, MT for a year and then came to Bozeman. In 1900, he married Margaret Ellis. For several years he worked as an assistant manager of the Golden Rule store in Bozeman, then from 1903 to 1913 he managed a store in Livingston. Returning to Bozeman, Allen founded the City Dye Works. Allen also worked in the real estate business (The Independent-Record, 28 March 1946). Margaret and Arthur Allen sold the property to O. E. Sheppard on July 29, 1939. O. E. and Dorothy Sheppard sold the property to Lester and Grace S. Woosley on August 7, 1939. Lester Woosley was born in Sedan, MT on November 16, 1900 to Joshua and Josephine Woosley. Lester worked as an auto mechanic, service manager, and salesman for a Bozeman Ford dealer from 1929 until his retirement in 1970 (The Billings Gazette, 28 May 1982). Grace Woosley was born on July 3, 1908 in Livingston, MT to Charles and Clara Barr. Grace married Lester on August 31, 1929 in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2021). Lester and Grace Woosley lived in the residence until c. 1953 (R. L. Polk & Co., 1940 to 1954). Lester and Grace Woosley sold this property to the Bozeman Lodge No. 463 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks on October 3, 1977. The Elks Lodge sold the property to William H. Oyler on November 20, 1987. William H. Oyler was born on November 3, 1949 in Manhattan, MT to Enos and Bette Oyler. Oyler attended Montana State University and the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. After graduating from Palmer, he returned to Gallatin Valley where he opened a chiropractic clinic. He later worked at JD’s Sprinklers. He married Judy Kuipers, a schoolmate in Manhattan (The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 10 December 2017). Oyler sold the property to Stephen L. Eby and Patricia L. Ferriter on October 2, 1991. After the estate of Stephen L. Eby sold the property to Peter Eby and Julie Medland on August 15, 1995, they issued a quit claim of the property to Patricia L. Ferriter the same day. Ferriter sold the property to Lisa L. McGrory on June 29, 1998. McGrory has resided in the residence during her ownership and remains the current owner as of December 2020. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Statement of Significance Property Name: 113 S Bozeman Ave Site Number: 161 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property at 113 S Bozeman Avenue consists of a single family residence built in the Folk Vernacular style. It was originally recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, and was regarded as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district” that retained no historic integrity “due to change in original design and materials." Since 1984, several modifications have been made to the exterior, including new siding, porch, and windows. The property is in excellent condition, but Metcalf concurs with the previous finding that it does not retain sufficient integrity. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. It is not located within an existing district and properties in the vicinity do not exhibit cohesive characteristics of a time, style, or high degree of integrity to suggest district potential. The site longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Metcalf recommends the site not eligible. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Integrity Property Name: 113 S Bozeman Ave Site Number: 161 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall. Some altered windows and new window openings affect the integrity of materials and design and other recent alterations such as the contemporary siding choices are incongruous with its age and style, affecting integrity of design and feeling.
