F. Sievert Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: James R. McDonald Architects, 1984, 209 S Bozeman Ave Montana Historical and Architectural Inventory Form. Document on-file with the City of Bozeman. Bozeman, MT. This site is a single-story, Hipped Roof Box form residence constructed c. 1950. The primary façade faces east onto S. Bozeman Ave. It was previously recorded by James. R. McDonald Architects in 1984. They described the site as follows: "This detached one-story single-family residence has a square plan with a recessed corner porch in the front extension. The two-bay façade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset glass-paned front entrance with fixed and 1/1 double-hung windows. There is a metal awning of the front fixed window. The frame construction is finished in asbestos siding and rests on a concrete foundation. The hipped roof is covered with blue asphalt shingles and has a central metal stovepipe. Outbuildings include a garage." Metcalf visited the site in 2020 and found some alterations since the time of the previous survey. A modern two-lite egress window with window well has replaced a basement window on the southeast corner of the façade and the metal awning over the window above has been removed. The south elevation supports a secondary entrance near the center of the elevation, accessed by a concrete stoop. A two-lite sliding window, a two-over-two lite horizontally divided hung window, and sliding basement lites are also present. The north elevation has three, two-over-two lite horizontally divided hung windows. A hip roofed garage is in the rear yard, accessed by paved driveway that runs along the south property boundary. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 209 S Bozeman Ave Site Number: 165 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The residence was constructed c. 1950 by L. F. Sievert. Louis Sievert was born in 1880 in Wheatland, Iowa (ancestry.com and Great Falls Tribune, March 13, 1957). He came to Montana in 1888 with his parents and they settled on a farm in the Gallatin Valley (Billings Gazette, March 12, 1957). He married Violet Matthews on March 29, 1905 in Bozeman, MT; they had eight children together (ancestry.com). Violet was born in 1882 and raised on a ranch northwest of Bozeman (Billings Gazette, August 25, 1967). Louis made his living as a building contractor and likely constructed the residence at 209 S. Bozeman Ave in the 1950s. Prior to this residence, the Seivert's had lived at several locations on N. Tracy, and at 429 W. Olive (ancestry.com). Louis only enjoyed the residence for a few short years before he passed in 1957 (Billings Gazette, March 12, 1957). Violet passed in 1967; the pair are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery (Billings Gazette, August 25, 1967). By 1956, the property was owned by Homer and Lela Snyder (Polk, 1956). Lela was born in Panora, Iowa in 1888 (Billings Gazette, October 16, 1967). Early in life, Lela moved with her family to a farm at Reese Creek near Belgrade. She married Homes Snyder in 1907 and together the pair ranched in the Belgrade area (Billings Gazette, October 16, 1967). In 1928, they began to operate the Tommy Yaden ranch near Belgrade. The pair retired in 1950 and moved into Bozeman. Homer passed in 1965 and Lela in 1967 (Billings Gazette, October 16, 1967). They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (findagrave.com). No other historical information could be found regarding this property. The current owner is Jack Ranieri. Metcalf finds the property retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D.
