Architectural Description
Property Name: 37 N Church Ave Site Number: 166
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single unit dwelling Architect: Architectural Firm/City/State:
Builder/Contractor: Company/City/State: Source of Information:
The site consists of a 1.5-story, front-and-wing form residence, likely built in the Queen Anne style but with many character defining elements removed. The residence was constructed in 1890 and the façade faces east onto N Church Ave. The house is irregular in plan
due to multiple additions. The exterior is clad in red brick. The roof is cross gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. Two red brick chimney's are present. The primary façade faces east onto N Church Ave. The entry is at the north end, within a shed roofed, brick faced, enclosed porch in the buildings reentrant corner. To the north of the entrance is a modern one over one lite double hung window with brick sill. To the south is a gable front wing with a pair of one-over-one lite windows centered on the first story within a segmented arch opening. A
single one-over-one lite window within a segmented arched opening is in the upper story gable above. The south elevation supports two, single-story, nested-gable additions, both extending to the south and a single-story, hipped roof addition, which also extends to the south. Windows present are modern metal paired and single one-over-one lite hung windows. The
south elevation of the south addition supports an additional entrance sheltered beneath a bracketed gable awning. The addition is clad in horizontal wood siding with vertical corner boards.
The west elevation was not easily visible from the public Right of Way, but it supports a wood deck on the second story accessed via a wood staircase.
The north elevation mimics the gable front of the east elevation, with paired windows on the first floor and a single window above, both set under segmented arched openings. The north side of the bricked in porch has two large fixed windows.
Overall, the site is in good condition and serving its intended purpose, but significant wear was noticed on the exterior cladding under
the windows and along the ground level.

History of Property
Property Name: 37 N Church Ave Site Number: 166
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The residence was constructed in 1890. The first known owner of 37 N Church was Elwood T. Summer (also spelled Sumner), who resided at the property from at least 1927-1929 with his wife Anna (Polk, 1927, 1929). Born in Dallas, TX in 1870, Elwood married Anna in 1909 and the pair came to the Gallatin Valley in 1912 (Missoulian, January 3, 1975). Anna was born in 1889 in KS. In 1932,
Elwood Summer was convicted of first degree assault for shooting evangelist Thomas Lyness; Summer had accused Lyness of having, "undue influence over Mrs. Sumner" and shot him twice (The Daily Inter Lake, March 30, 1932 and December 12, 1931). The pair moved to Missoula in 1942 and Elwood passed in 1947 (Missoulian, January 3, 1975). Anna continued to live at their residence in Missoula until her death in 1975. By 1931, the property was owned by Mrs. Margaret Brink (Polk, 1931). Born in 1876 in Montpelier, ID, Margaret married John F.
Brink in 1926 in Bozeman (ancestry.com). John was born in Platte County, MO in 1874, and had been previously married to Lillian Hayes (ancestry.com). John passed in 1928 of unknown causes and is buried in Bozeman's Sunset Hills Cemetery with his first wife (findagrave.com). Margaret continued to live in Bozeman, working as a housekeeper and at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital (Independent-Record, November 12, 1928). Margaret passed in 1954 and is buried at Sunset Hills Cemetery (findagrave.com).
Bozeman directories indicate the owner of the property in 1933 was Joseph E. Lay (Polk, 1933). Lay lived at the residence a short
while with his first wife, Nellie. Born in Bozeman in 1881, Joseph served as a pastor at the Full Gospel Mission while living at 37 N Church. By the 1940s, Joseph was living in Oregon with his second wife, Atha Sines (ancestry.com). He passed in 1972 and is buried in Hubbard, Oregon (findagrave.com).
In 1937, the owner of the property was Lillie F. Thomson, her daughter Marie Thomson, who worked as a clerk, resided with her (Polk, 1937). Lillie was born in Illinois in 1878 and married David Thomson in 1905 (ancestry.com). It is unknown when she
relocated to Montana, but by 1930, Lillie was living in Bozeman with her husband, David and their three children. Later in 1930, Lillie and David divorced (ancestry.com). Lillie was remarried in 1946 to Preston Rittenhouse (ancestry.com). She passed in 1953 and
is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery (findagrave.com).
By 1940, the house at 37 N Church was owned by Ambrose Herman Gambill, who had married Marie Thomson in 1936 (ancestry.com). Gambill was born in 1908 in Healing Springs, AR (ancestry.com). While living at 37 N Church, he worked as a
mechanic at State Auto Company, later in life he also worked at Owenhouse Hardware (Polk, 1942). It seems likely that Ambrose and Marie hosted boarders at their residence, as Bozeman's directory lists four renters between 1940 and 1944, including Mrs. Carrie
Elizabeth Kreuger, Glendyn Stevens, Mrs. Nellie Terry, and Marie's widowed mother, Mrs. Lillie Thomson (Polk, 1940, 1942, 1944). Glendyn worked as a cook, while Mrs. Kreuger was employed as a maid at the Gallatin Hotel (Polk, 1940, 1942). Renter Mrs. Nellie
M. Terry worked as a baker at the Bon Ton Bakery (Polk, 1944). Ambrose passed in 1990 and Marie in 2015; they are buried together at Sunset Hills (findagrave.com).
The property continued to serve as a residence and boarding house into the 1950s, although under a different owner. Mrs. Mary
Redfield owned the house from at least 1947-1950 (Polk, 1947, 1950). Born Mary Ethel Hicks in 1894, she grew up in Minnesota (ancestry.com). She married Grant Redfield in 1916 and together they resided in Kellogg, ID with Grant's family (ancestry.com).
Grant and Mary divorced in 1930 (ancestry.com). It is unclear when Mary came to Montana, but she was living in Bozeman by 1940. By 1947, she owned the residence at 37 N Church and took on boarders, including Peter and Lola Matisheck and Everett and Grace
Tallman (Polk, 1947). Peter worked as an instructor at Montana State College (now Montana State University) and Everett was a millman at Montana Flour Mills. Mary continued to live in Bozeman until her death in 1988 (Gallatin County Genealogical Society).
By 1954, property ownership had passed to Luther and Kathy (also Katie) Constant; the pair resided at the property until at least 1959
(Polk, 1954, 1959). Luther was born in Illinois in 1875 and came to Montana at an unknown date. In 1911, he married Katie Williams in Bozeman and by 1920, the pair were farming together in Belgrade (ancestry.com). They continued to farm near Liberty, Montana until the 1950's when they retired to Bozeman (ancestry.com). Luther passed in 1969 and Katie in 1971. They are buried together at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (findagrave.com).
The current owner is Deborah Penland.
