It was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, and they described the house as follows: "This detached one-story single-family residence with elements of the upright-and-wing style has an irregular plan with an open corner hip-roofed porch with a decorative metal support. The two-bay façade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset front entrance and fixed windows with decorative shutters. The frame construction is finished in stucco and rests on a rubble foundation. The gable roof is covered with green asphalt shingles and features one central brick chimney and one rear metal chimney. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. Alterations include the stuccoed siding. Outbuildings include a carriage house of drop siding." Metcalf revisited the site in October 2020 and noted some changes since the 1984 survey. The central chimney and decorative shutters have been removed and the front door has been replaced with a natural wood door which has a full length window center. The house is a modified single story Queen Anne with a wood frame and a T-shape plan. The foundation has been stuccoed so the rubble foundation described by McDonald could not be confirmed. The primary entrance is within a particle board enclosed porch at the north end of the primary east façade, in the reentrant corner. The overhanging porch is supported by a decorative metal corner post that is not original. To the south of the entry, centered on the gable front wing, is a large plate glass fixed window. On the south elevation is a bank of three casement windows and, on the transecting gable end there is another large plate glass fixed window. It appears another fixed window is further west along the elevation, partly obscured by the fence enclosing the rear yard. The north elevation has a shed roofed addition toward the rear, clad in particle board. It contains two lite sliding windows and a secondary entrance. The site is in fair condition, overall. The stucco, additions, replaced and modified windows and openings compromise integrity of materials, design, feeling, and workmanship. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 111 South Church Ave Site Number: 169 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property currently addressed as 111 South Church Avenue was platted by Francis Harper as Harper’s Addition on June 10, 1882. Francis Harper was born on March 30, 1839 in New York. Francis "Frank" Harper came to Bozeman, MT in 1865. Frank married Dora Graham on June 4, 1875 in Bozeman. The Reverend T. C. Iliff married the couple and William Alderson and John Grannis served as witnesses to the marriage (Ancestry.com, 2017). Frank died on June 17, 1891 and was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery (Findagrave.com, 2021; Livingston Enterprise, 27 June 1891). A residence was built on this property between 1889 and 1891, possibly by Berry and Martha King. Berry and Martha King purchased the property from Mary E. and William A. Beam on August 25, 1890. Berry King was born on August 1, 1850 in Pickens County, Alabama (Findagrave.com, 2021). Berry King married Martha J. Anderson on November 13, 1888 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2016). They sold the property to Martha L. Wade on April 16, 1894. Martha Wade sold the property to her son, Samuel M. Wade, on March 15, 1898. Samuel sold the property to Lilian A. Auld on April 25, 1898. Joseph Auld was born in Booth Harbor, ME on September 16, 1856 to John and Mary A. Auld. In his youth he went to Boston and secured a position as a clerk with a wholesale boot and shoe firm. In 1878, he moved to Greenfield, IA, where he worked on a farm. In 1882 he moved to Glendive, MT and worked on a cattle ranch and homesteaded 160 acres in Dawson County. In 1886 he was elected County Treasurer of Dawson County, a position he served in for six years. In 1896 he was elected State Senator. In 1903 he moved to Miles City, MT and worked as the receiver of the United States land office. On August 20, 1886 he married Lillian A. Chapin. Lillian Chapin had been born in Louisville, KY to Joshua L. and Fannie Chapin (Findagrave.com, 2021). Joseph and Lillian Auld sold the property to Thomas F. Henegan on September 20, 1901. Thomas F. Henegan was born on March 17, 1852 in Unionville, PA. He came to MT in c. 1881 as a land commissioner for the Northern Pacific Railway. Henegan married Hannah Cupples in 1888. He served as a member of the board which classified Gallatin County lands (Findagrave.com, 2021; The Independent-Record, 09 December 1931). The Henegans never lived in the residence on this property. During ownership they lived at 422 East Babcock Street in Bozeman. Hannah Henegan sold the property to Charles Long on June 1, 1934. Henry F. W. and Ruth E. Noel lived in this residence from 1925 to 1931. They purchased the residence next door at 107 South Church Avenue in 1932. Henry Frederick William Noel was born on October 1, 1886 in Columbus, KS to Louis and Anna Noel. Ruth Coleman was born in 1888 (Findagrave.com, 2021). Henry worked at Lovelace Grocery and Nash-Finch while living in this residence (R. L. Polk & Co., 1933 to 1947). Charles and Cora Long lived in this residence during their ownership, beginning in 1934. Charles Long was born on May 25, 1887 in Walhalla, SC to Henry and Caroline Long. While living in Bozeman he worked as a locomotive engineer for the Northern Pacific Railway. He retired in 1956 after 50 years of service. Long died on February 19, 1961 and was buried in Bozeman’s Sunset Hills Cemetery (The Missoulian, 20 February 1961). Cora Nicholson was born on November 14, 1888 in Aberdeen, SD to William and Jane Nicholson (Ancestry.com, 2001). Cora married Charles Long on December 30, 1912 in Helena, MT (Ancestry.com, 2017). Cora died December 7, 1966 and was buried with Charles in Sunset Hills Cemetery (Findagrave.com, 2021). Cora Long sold this property to Marlene Zwolle on May 23, 1962. Zwolle sold the property back to Cora M. Long and her daughter, Helen M. Wolfe, on May 23, 1962. Long and Wolfe sold the property to Gladys M. Mecklenburg on December 11, 1964. Gladys and Bruce Mecklenburg lived in the residence when they owned it. Gladys McMullin was born on June 6, 1918 in Salesville (now Gallatin Gateway), MT to Frank and Maude (Schumate) McMullin. Gladys was a plant clerk for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company. Gladys married Ralph Ardesson October 10, 1936 in Butte, MT. They divorced in 1957. Gladys went on to marry Bruce Mecklenburg in 1964. Gladys died on December 26, 1995 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com, 2001). Danny worked at the Empire Building and Norma was an office secretary for State Farm (R. L. Polk & Co., 1967). The Ardessons sold the property to Rueben A. and I. Connie Peterson on December 20, 1971. Rueben Peterson had been born on May 14, 1905 in Wilmar, MN (The Billings Gazette, 05 Jun 1976). McDonald Architects. At that time the property was considered to be an intrusive element within a potential historic district…[and] the historic integrity of this property has not been retained due to change in original design and materials." Metcalf visited the site and found that the site lacks sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building in an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. While it is associated with a former state senator, Joseph Auld, the association post-dates his political work and has otherwise been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. It is not located within an existing district and properties in the vicinity do not exhibit cohesive characteristics of a time, style, or high degree of integrity to suggest district potential. The site longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Metcalf recommends the site not eligible. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 9 Integrity Property Name: 111 South Church Ave Site Number: 169 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in fair condition, overall. Replacement of original exterior cladding with stucco and replaced and modified windows affect the integrity of materials and design. The addition to the rear affects the integrity of design, feeling, and workmanship. Metcalf finds that the site does not retain sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
