This site is the Saunders Building, a two-story commercial building designed by Fred F. Willson for Guy F. Saunders in 1924. The primary facade faces north onto E Main Street with a commercial store front recessed and at-grade. The building was originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984 and subsequently listed in the NRHP as contributing to the Main Street Historic District in 1986. McDonald describes the site as follows: "This attached two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with an elaborate polychromatic design set into the facade, a metal awning over the storefront entrance, and a marble base under the storefront. The asymmetrical facade consists of a central front entrance with storefront windows and a stained glass, transomed (sic) side entrance to the upper level, set under a brick archway. The patterned multi-colored brick features five double-hung 1/1 windows on the second story with a light-brick outline and a continuous granite sill. The central parapet of the roofline features the building name set in granite block. The foundation is not visible, and the flat roof is covered with built-up materials, and sits perpendicular to the street." Metcalf visited the site in 2020 and noted only minor alterations since the time of previous survey. The metal awning has been removed to reveal a multi-lite transom over the entire storefront. Overall, the site is in excellent condition.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The site is named for its original owner, Guy F. Saunders, who commissioned Fred F. Willson to design this building in 1924. Born in New Brunswick, Canada in 1872, Saunders and his wife Annie immigrated to Bozeman in 1905. Saunders opened a tailoring and cleaning business, which moved into his new building on Main Street in 1924. The building was original designed with a foot-thick
cake-brick wall on the west elevation for additional fire protection from combustible cleaning materials. Saunders purchased Bozeman's City Dye Works at a unknown date after 1913, the Dye Works was originally run by A. A. Allen (Independent-Record, June 9, 1931 and March 28, 1946). Annie passed in 1953 and Guy in 1956; they are buried together in Bozeman's Sunset Hills Cemetery (Great Falls Tribune, November 7, 1956 and findagrave.com). City Dye Works and Dry Cleaners continued to live on after Saunder's death; in 1959 Cecil and Ruth Klatt along with W.R., W. C.,
Gladys, and Jesse Pilgrim filed articles of incorporation for City Dye Works of Bozeman, they listed $50,000 in authorized capital (Independent-Record, March 13, 1959). After 1963, the business was owned and operated by Conrad and Pat Kradolfer, which they then turned over to their sons, Conrad and Curt, in 1987 (legacy.com).
