Bridger Bowl and CanyonGate
As they mull their decision about zoning at CanyonGate, City Commissioners might reflect on the 20-year
saga of development efforts at Bridger Bowl. Starting in the early '90s, a shifting cast of developers sought
to turn the Bridger Bowl base area into BigSky-lite, a dense development of condos, single-family homes,
and commercial. The Canyon community and the skiing community fought hard for two decades, not
because they were anti-development nimbys, but because they knew that a: Bridger Bowl would be forever
changed and its ethos lost and unrecognizable and b: they knew different kinds of development could
happen there and still reflect community values. The Canyon community's persistence and diligence won
the day and the developers departed. Then the market allowed a new use, Crosscut and Bridger Bowl is
thriving. Can any Commissioner say, with a straight face, that they wish the developers at Bridger Bowl had
been given all they wanted in terms of development potential?
It's the Commission's job to balance community values with the financial aspirations of developers. Mr.
Halloran's plan is just his plan, there could be many others that are both profitable and more in line with
the community. And Mr. Halloran's belated offer to provide “affordable” housing in his plan should be seen
for what it is, a cynical calculation. The Commission should reject Halloran's zoning request and approve
something in line with community sentiment.
