The intersection at Oak and Flanders Mill is, at best, confusing for experienced drivers, and at worst,
dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike. Its current design is a (catastrophic) accident waiting to
happen. We have instructed our daughter, a GHS student, to avoid this intersection but we can only hope
that she does and we avoid it ourselves.
When heading east or west on Oak to then make a left turn onto Flanders Mill, drivers don’t know if they
should pass oncoming left turners with their passenger side facing the oncoming left turner (like you would
at a light, say at 19th and main) or their driver side. I have seen and done both. I have had 40-50 year-old
adults who have been driving since they were in high school ask me what to do there. When traffic backs
up on Oak, this creates blind spots for the left-turning driver who waits in their respective left lane. If they
instead initiate the turn, and wait between the grassy boulevard, it creates blind spots for oncoming
east/westbound drivers in the right lanes who are going straight through who rightly think they have the
right-on-way.
When heading north or south on Flanders Mill, the wait to continue straight through the intersection can
be long, trying the patience of all drivers.
Pedestrians are not visible and there is no crazy, blinky light to alert drivers of a crossing pedestrian, of
which there are many as it sits between residential and 2 public schools. Road designers must plan for the
distracted driver and put the safety of pedestrians in school zones above all other priorities. That has not
been done here. In fact, intentional or not, the priority here is clearly to move a high volume of traffic east
and west quickly. Because of the other problems listed above, even drivers who are not distracted but
trying to navigate the intersection safely can easily miss a kid crossing Flanders Mill or Oak.
There is SO MUCH WRONG with this intersection; a catastrophic accident is just a matter of time in its
current state, will likely involve kids, and is completely avoidable. Please, please, please address this ASAP.
