Intent: The Associated Students of Montana State University (ASMSU) supports the creation of
MSU School Pride in Sustainability Signage on MSU buildings, systems, and infrastructure that
have sustainability measures. The signage will explicate each building, system, and/or
infrastructure sustainability success and present sustainability innovation as a major point of
campus pride.
Whereas, the IPCC has issued repeated and increasingly dire warnings regarding the state of the
global climate;1 and,
Whereas, MSU has made notable progress toward sustainability on campus buildings including
energy efficiency retrofits, LEED-certified buildings, geothermal heat pumps, investments into
photovoltaic, passive solar2, stormwater, and transportation; and,
Whereas, MSU is committed to supporting sustainability on campus5 and has made admirable
progress to making campus building and infrastructure projects sustainable; and,
Whereas, According to the UN, sustainable innovation in the built environment is essential to
addressing climate change6; and,
Whereas, According to the MT state code annotated High-Performance Building Standards, all
new MSU construction must be LEED Silver at minimum7,8; and,
Whereas, MSU has spent significant resources on campus sustainability and progress toward
net-zero carbon8; and,
Whereas, It should be noted that MSU’s investment in these areas saves substantial funds that
can be devoted to future expenses; and,
Whereas, There is growing public awareness of climate change among pre-college age
individuals9; and,
Whereas, Other state schools have used sustainability measures as a recruiting tool10; and,
Whereas, MSU stands to benefit from increased awareness of campus sustainability efforts both
in school pride and recruitment of new students; and,
Whereas, Widespread signage in visible areas inside buildings and along main pedestrian routes
is seen by most if not all of the MSU student body and prospective students daily; and,
Whereas, Sustainability is a relatively unstated, though essential, component of MSU marketing
and school pride (without sustainable/regenerative adaptations, Montana’s fishable trout rivers
will become almost unfishable in a few decades11,12); and,
Whereas, Sustainability should occupy an increased place in MSU’s school pride marketing and
signage (such as 1. Near the SUB solar panels, 2. By the geothermal wells, 3. At the heating
plant/steam tunnels, 4. By the Norm passive solar wall); and,
Whe reas, The cost of designing, producing, and installing this signage project at MSU is
estimated at $20,000 total from all funding sources; and,
Whereas, Funding for most of this project can likely be covered by various departments and
colleges across campus who have a stake in promoting the money that they have already invested
in sustainability projects; and,
Whereas, ASMSU’s financial contribution would amount to under half the proposed amount
which is well within ASMSU’s means;
Whereas, these signs will be a lasting legacy for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, the ASMSU senate supports the creation of Goal - Net Zero signage for all campus
buildings and infrastructure that incorporate noteworthy sustainability features. ASMSU will
collaborate with the MSU Office of Sustainability, Facilities Services, the College of
Engineering, and the College of Arts and Architecture to craft the text and graphic design of this
signage and ensure complete and factual information; and,
Resolved, Send this resolution to the President’s Office, The Bozeman City Council, the Office
