Hi all, Per the request of the ASMSU Senate you are receiving 2021-R-16 Resolution for School Pride in Sustainability Signage. The Resolution passed with 15 voting Yes, 2 voting No, and 0 Abstentions. I have attached the document for your reference, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! Best, Kate Riggers ASMSU Senate Speaker Associated Students of Montana State University Strand Union Building 221 | Bozeman, MT | 59717 (208)-400-0182 2021-R-16 Resolution to Create Sustainability Signage Sponsor: Atticus Cummings Yes: 15 No: 2 Abs: 0 Co-Sponsors: Katherine Carlson, Cooper McCleery Date: 12/9/2021 Endorsements: MSU Campus Climate Coalition Speaker Signature: Vote Necessary: Majority Kathryn E Riggers Intent: The Associated Students of Montana State University (ASMSU) supports the creation of MSU School Pride in Sustainability Signage on MSU buildings, systems, and infrastructure that have sustainability measures. The signage will explicate each building, system, and/or infrastructure sustainability success and present sustainability innovation as a major point of campus pride. Whereas, the IPCC has issued repeated and increasingly dire warnings regarding the state of the global climate;1 and, Whereas, MSU has made notable progress toward sustainability on campus buildings including energy efficiency retrofits, LEED-certified buildings, geothermal heat pumps, investments into photovoltaic, passive solar2, stormwater, and transportation; and, Whereas, MSU is committed to supporting sustainability on campus5 and has made admirable progress to making campus building and infrastructure projects sustainable; and, Whereas, According to the UN, sustainable innovation in the built environment is essential to addressing climate change6; and, Whereas, According to the MT state code annotated High-Performance Building Standards, all new MSU construction must be LEED Silver at minimum7,8; and, Whereas, MSU has spent significant resources on campus sustainability and progress toward net-zero carbon8; and, Whereas, It should be noted that MSU’s investment in these areas saves substantial funds that can be devoted to future expenses; and, Whereas, There is growing public awareness of climate change among pre-college age individuals9; and, Whereas, Other state schools have used sustainability measures as a recruiting tool10; and, Whereas, MSU stands to benefit from increased awareness of campus sustainability efforts both in school pride and recruitment of new students; and, Whereas, Widespread signage in visible areas inside buildings and along main pedestrian routes is seen by most if not all of the MSU student body and prospective students daily; and, Whereas, Sustainability is a relatively unstated, though essential, component of MSU marketing and school pride (without sustainable/regenerative adaptations, Montana’s fishable trout rivers will become almost unfishable in a few decades11,12); and, Whereas, Sustainability should occupy an increased place in MSU’s school pride marketing and signage (such as 1. Near the SUB solar panels, 2. By the geothermal wells, 3. At the heating plant/steam tunnels, 4. By the Norm passive solar wall); and, Whe reas, The cost of designing, producing, and installing this signage project at MSU is estimated at $20,000 total from all funding sources; and, Whereas, Funding for most of this project can likely be covered by various departments and colleges across campus who have a stake in promoting the money that they have already invested in sustainability projects; and, Whereas, ASMSU’s financial contribution would amount to under half the proposed amount which is well within ASMSU’s means; Whereas, these signs will be a lasting legacy for many years to come; now, therefore, be it Resolved, the ASMSU senate supports the creation of Goal - Net Zero signage for all campus buildings and infrastructure that incorporate noteworthy sustainability features. ASMSU will collaborate with the MSU Office of Sustainability, Facilities Services, the College of Engineering, and the College of Arts and Architecture to craft the text and graphic design of this signage and ensure complete and factual information; and, Resolved, Send this resolution to the President’s Office, The Bozeman City Council, the Office of Sustainability, Director of Facilities Services EJ Hook, The Dean of Students Office, Sreekala Bajwa, Dean of the College of Agriculture; Royce Smith, Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture; Dan Miller, Dean of the Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship; Alison Harmon, Dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Development; Brett Gunnink, Dean of the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering; Stephanie Gray, Dean of Gallatin College; Craig Ogilvie, Dean of the Graduate School; Ilse-Mari Lee, Dean of the Honors College; Yves Idzerda, Dean of the College of Letters and Science; Kenning Arlitsch, Dean of the Library; Sarah Shannon, Dean of the Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing;, Director of Admissions Mike Ouert, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Montana NBC and CBS news, and the MSU Exponent. 1 https://www.ipcc.ch/reports/ 2 https://www.montana.edu/sustainability/programs_and_projects/leed_certified_buildings.html 3 https://www.montana.edu/bobcatspirit/troutu/ 4https://www.montana.edu/marketing/about-msu/bozeman/index.html 5https://www.montana.edu/sustainability/who_we_are/index.html 6UN sustainable Development Goals 9, 11, and 13 https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/ 7https://www.montana.edu/pdc/docs/documents/_Docs/consultant_docs/HighPerfBldgStds.pdf 8https://architecture.mt.gov/Design#169722271-high-performance-building-standards 9https://www.un.org/youthenvoy/environment-climate-change/ 10https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2019-09-17/why-college-campuses- are-going-green 11https://montanafreepress.org/2021/08/20/montana-trout-in-drought-trouble/ 12https://montanaclimate.org/chapter/water SENATOR VOTES Caroline Roeder: No Faith Himmel: Yes Halton Stancil: Yes Tyler Dobie: Yes Atticus Cumming: Yes Amber Kurth: Yes Jack Pearlman: Yes Autumn Freudenberg: Absent Claire Matthews: Yes Rosamarie Roccisano: Yes Cooper McCleery: Yes Katherine Carlson: Yes Nicholas Fitzmaurice: Yes Ellie Jackson: Yes Isabella Roccisano: Yes Jaedyn Birchmeier: Absent Melissa Ramirez: Yes Pushya Krishna: Yes Alexandra Wilz: Absent Katie Delker: Yes
