It’s a distaster or, God-forbid, devastating accident waiting to happen and can be - must be - avoided. City planners and engineers should have worked through the logistics in the same manner they worked through installing a light at Oak and Ferguson or a roundabout at Oak and Cottonwood. As the parent of two Gallatin High School students, I can attest to the congestion created in the morning, during lunch, and after-school rush, not to mention drivers who speed through the school zone surrounding the school. Drivers are impatient, speeding through the school zone, or not paying attention to pedestrians as they navigate to get out from behind the line of cars waiting to turn from Oak onto Flanders Mill. I don’t recall there even being a crosswalk with flashing lights or signals for pedestrians to use to let drivers know they are present, which seems at odds with safety for an intersection at the corner of a school property. Often times I have seen students either not look up from their phones to cross or bolt to make a run for it to beat a car or truck - the same cars and trucks who can’t always see the pedestrian students or the ones speeding in a school zone. It is difficult to cross over Oak from Flanders Mill and it is confusing or a battle of Chicken to make left turns from Oak onto Flanders Mill. Please assist the schools, the students, and the community and improve this intersection, especially as the area continues to build and grow. Mix in snowy, icey roads and inexperienced drivers and everything seems exacerbated. Please help!
