To members of the Bozeman Zoning Commission: I live on Headlands Drive and am concerned about the requests by HomeBase Partners to alter zoning near Bridger Drive and Story Mill Road. It is my understanding the revisions would allow hotels, retail stores, and large apartment buildings to be built in that area. I am opposed to approving these zoning requests. Considerations: 1. Roadway congestion. The amount of traffic on Bridger Drive has increased markedly in the past 8 years. It is increasingly difficult to enter onto the roadway during morning and evening rush hour as well during the winter months as skiers travel to recreate. Drivers frequently speed through disregarding children, bikers, and pedestrians attempting to cross the roadway. This is a narrow two lane road that is already impacted by the increased growth Bozeman has experienced. The completion of the Bridger View housing development near Story Mill Park will affect it even more. Hotels, gas stations, retail stores, and apartment buildings will increase traffic and create additional congestion.2. Railroad crossings. It’s not uncommon to wait 10-30+ minutes for a train to cross when traveling across Bozeman. There have been times when both the Rouse street and Griffin Drive crossings are impassible with no other remedy than circumnavigating by going north. I believe the impact from a zoning change would result in even longer delays when traversing the city. This further complicates a problem for emergency vehicles as well. 3. Safety concerns. If the zoning proposals pass the safety and security of the Story Mill Park could be negatively affected. The community park is a valued resource for schools, organizations and individuals in Bozeman and surrounding towns. It is an important nature reserve for migrating bird and other wildlife. The increased number of people and cars would disrupt the balance of these systems residents fought hard to protect. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
