Potential development near Story Mill park draws early pushback By Nora Shelly Chronicle Staff Writer Sep 22, 2021 "The neighborhood to the north and east is a beautiful neighborhood made up of single family homes and duplexes and such — so I have heard that they’re concerned. But we’re focused onwhat the city’s goals are, what the market wants,” Holloran said. “Obviously we have a housing shortage throughout all of Bozeman and Gallatin Valley and we would expect a nice, diverse mix of housing on the property.” -Andy Holloran I am opposed to the Canyon Gate Development for many of the reasons already made public; access to emergency medical care, emergency response risks to responders as traffic and trainspush the boundaries of the golden hour, quality of life for existing residents, wildlife habitat, etc. Less mentioned is the proximity of Andy's work to the trout sustaining streams that fuel oureconomy. As a former fishing guide, a former volunteer for the Bridger Canyon Rural Fire Department, and a resident of Bozeman for decades, I have experienced first hand the impactsof population increase. Moving so many people, so close to the spawning waters of trout, will have an extreme negative impact on downriver fisheries. Over the last two decades, the fishpopulation of the East Gallatin River has been decimated. One only needs to drive to bridge accesses on the East Gallatin to see what is already in play. Bringing more people to the banksof Bridger Creek will only exacerbate the situation. There is plenty of space west of town, closer to larger water bodies more capable of handling increased angling pressure, closer to shopping, closer to the offerings of MSU, closer to thecommercial businesses Andy feels we are pining for. With the HRDC housing development in place, The Story Mill development in the works, the impact of increasing auto emissions onthe environment that attracts the business, and the delicate nature of our clean water tributaries, perhaps we should look a bit further into the future when looking for high-densitydevelopment locations. Thank you for your consideration, Kevin Guettler
