22MSP | NORTH CENTRAL
PROJECT DESIGN
North Central is envisioned to become a new destination district between Main Street
and the neighborhood to the north of Downtown. As demonstrated in the framework
diagram below, it will be fully integrated with its context, embellishing the existing
city’s gridded street system with new distinct places. North Central is most directly
linked with Main Street via Wilson and Tracy Avenues, forming a “ladder structure”
of sorts, in which the east-west streets are forming the “rungs”. Each of these rungs
offer their own type of character and sense of place, and the intersections will provide
clear points of orientation. The framework diagram identifies two special intersection
types: Portals and Arrivals. The Portals are located on Lamme and Villard Street and
serve as gateways to the district, to be manifested in architectural and landscape
architectural design. The two Arrival intersections signify the heart of the district on
Beall Street. Beall Street itself, between the two Arrival intersections, is envisioned as
the most vibrant street section of the district, potentially expressed and emphasized
with special street furnishings and materials. Adjacent ground floor are planned to be
active in to maximize activation of the street. Finally, a network of internal pedestrian
pathways connects through the blocks and optimizes discovery of more secluded
courtyards and gardens, while maximizing walkability.
