Hello City Commission,
I am a Bozeman resident and MSU doctoral student, and I'm interested in learning the steps the city could
take to reduce urban human-wildlife-conflict in the Bozeman Creek area between Church St and Wilson St.
As I am sure you know, a black bear sow and two cubs spent the last several months in that region and
repeatedly got into trash cans in the surrounding neighborhoods. Running the trail, you see garbage strewn
about lawns almost every morning. This is a risk for people and pets in the neighborhood, but mostly it is
absolutely high risk for the bears. Bear cubs habituating to this behavior will continue to cause disturbances
in following years. My greatest fear and sadness is that with these problem bears FWP may elect lethal
management. Furthermore, it is not good for the bears' health to eat human trash.
Bozeman has an obligation to reduce human-wildlife-conflict and protect our local species, as outlined in
the Bozeman Community Plan. In 2017, Missoula issued an ordinance mandating bear resistant trash
containers in the identified "Bear Buffer Zone" of the Rattlesnake neighborhood. Grant funding helped
supply residents with bear proof trash cans in that region. I believe it would behoove Bozeman residents
and local wildlife to pursue issuing a similar ordinance.
I would like to know the process to initiate this measure, and history of bear-human conflict strategies in
the past. If you can provide me with a contact, that would be fantastic.
Thank you,
Malory K. Peterson
