MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 30 W Main St Site Number: 247 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Romanesque If Other, specify: Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Retail Men's wear Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a commercial structure built ca. 1906 with elaborate polychromatic brickwork. It was previously recorded by James R. McDonald Architects and subsequently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). McDonald described the structure as follows: "This attached two-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with two inset front entrances, one to the main store and one to the upstairs level, both protected by sandstone or limestone cornice. The asymmetrical façade consists of the entrances and large fixed windows on the street level, and 1/1 double-hung windows on the second story with sandstone sills and corbeled brick forming pilasters to frame the window groupings. The bearing wall construction is finished in a polychromatic brick with a very smooth face. The roof is flat with built-up materials, and lies perpendicular to the street. Metcalf revisited the site in November 2020 and noted only minor modifications. These include the removal of the shallow wood-shingled awning above the ground floor windows and entrances, and new shop sign lettering over a panel of horizontal wood siding also above the windows and entrances (where the old sign was). The rear (south) elevation, not previously described, is dominated by a carport across the first story, with stairs on the west side leading up to the second story. The carport roof is very low-pitched, and it is supported by a series of metal poles. The staircase from the carport leads to a second-story addition to the original brick exterior. On its west side, the addition is clad in vertical wood siding and includes three window openings. It appears to be a mud room or covered entryway. The east side of the addition has a concrete plaster exterior and two side by side 1/1 lite hung windows within a single bay. Both sections of the addition have shed roofs, but at different heights against the brick exterior of the original building. Two, 1/1 lite hung windows, each within an arched bay, are on the west elevation on the second story of the original brick building. No other distinguishable ornaments were noted. The site is in excellent condition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 30 W Main St Site Number: 247 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This site is the George Safley Block, a brick commercial block built in 1906. In Cohen's 1985 history of the property, he speculates that the building was likely erected by George R. Safley for his undertaking and picture framing business. Safley was the president of the Montana Undertakers Association. The architect is unknown, but based on the building's striking facade characterized by complex polychromatic brickwork, it is possible it was designed by the same architect who designed the only comparable buildings in the Main Street Historic District; either C.S. Haire who designed the Willson Co. Building (101 E. Main) or Fred Willson who designed the Saunders Building (124-126 E. Main). Early businesses housed at this address include "Moving Pictuers"--likely a theater--noted in the 1912 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. D.H. Budd Co., a local plumbing company, had its offices here in the 1920s, and then its successor, the F.L. Dye Co. in the 1930s. The upper floor was rented as a rooming house (Cohen 1985). According to the Montana Cadastral records the rear carport off of the south elevation was added to the property in 1960. In 2013 Revolvr Menswear took over the space at 30 W Main Street (Revolvr 2021). A real estate website suggests that the second floor is currently a single-family residence that was renovated in 1995 (realtor.com 2021). It was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and subsequently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). Metcalf finds that despite the modern aluminum windows and storefront sign, the structure retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing site within the Main Street Historic District and retains sufficient integrity to maintain its listed status. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 30 W Main St Site Number: 247 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition. The new storefront sign as well as the aluminum framed second story windows and storefront display windows affect integrity of design, materials, and feeling. The removal of the wood shingled awning, however, restore some of the original feeling and design. The other aspects are retained.
