Dear Mayor Andrus, City Commissioners and Community Development Director Matsen: In regard to The Ives project – I support cash-in lieu of parkland, as this development is in Bozeman’s urban downtown core and there are several amazing and sizeable city parks within easy walking distance from this proposed building site. And as the site sits right now, a vast and underutilized asphalt parking lot, there will be no loss of historic or present green space. For your consideration in light of The North Central project, I suggest reading the following article: https://marker.medium.com/zillow-isnt-buying-all-of-the- homes-on-your-block-f74fac832672 . The author clearly states “America is in the middle of a desperate housing crisis because our laws have restricted us from building more homes for people to live in. The only way we can alleviate this housing crisis is to allow more housing to be built.” This sentiment is not exclusive of Bozeman. <!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--> <!--[endif]--> I understand the collective lament of losing how Bozeman used to be, but the fact is that Bozeman is changing, and we need to future proof our growing city to house all our citizens safely, inclusively, and equitably. We will all have to adjust to a new sense of place, and I believe that projects that increase density at our very core will help to conserve our beautiful natural environs and resources. As the author of the article concludes, “We’re faced with two options. Either we can take our housing crisis seriously and adopt a new collective knowledge, or we can point fingers at convenient scapegoats on social media and watch the problem get worse.” Thank you for your time and attention.
