Please have one of the city garbage guys swing by the Cat’s Paw and pick up the bags behind the back lot, before they degrade or an animal gets into them. They are there thanks to an industrious fellow named Topo, who took it upon himself to pick up the accumulated litter. He was living in a tent back there as he was not able to find housing, but he wanted to be a good steward — a giver, not a taker. Topo inspired me to be better. I’ve been picking up trash at Sacajawea Park off N. 7th for years, as well as around Darigold and the N. 8th roadbed by my house, all of which are frequented by the homeless. I walk my dog down the roadbed daily but that Cat’s Paw trash-heap was too intimidating to tackle. Now that Topo has made some strides, I bring a trash bag of my own and fill it during my walk. I relayed all of this to Chief Veltkamp, but he was somewhat dismissive in his reply. And it seems that his crew has run poor Topo off — his tent is gone. But the litter he picked up remains. Please do not render his efforts in vain and let those bags rip open for the litter to re-disperse. I would do it myself but my truck is in the shop. Maybe one of the cops that evicted Topo could grab the bags? Sure, it’s not his job, but picking up litter isn’t mine, either. Let’s all chip in and do what’s best for our community.
