First, this is my home. I was born and raised in Great Falls, grew up skiing for the Big Sky Ski Team, interned
for Max Baucus in DC before heading to school. My uncle played football for MSU and has served on the
Parks Board, my brother and sister went to MSU, I was married in Bozeman, and moved back about a year
and a half ago with my amazing wife, Lumay. Our first child, our sweet plump little boy named Wilde, was
born in Bozeman this last Election Day. This is my home and I want to make myself useful for our
community.
So how can a non-architect non-planner in a city full of architects and planners be helpful to the
Community Development Board? In my day job currently, I advise early stage and growth stage urban
innovation startups on strategy, communications, public policy and social impact. Whether it's innovative
housing models, mobility startups, turning parking lots into food parks, or driving sustainable cities strategy
for one of the FAANG tech leaders, every one of my clients is engaging with the built environment or public
realm in some way. Previously I had the opportunity to lead global strategy, public policy, social impact, and
communications teams at a number of leading tech startups: REEF (transforming parking lots into urban
mobility hubs and marketplaces with goal of creating 15 minute neighborhoods), WeWork, Lyft, and
Getaround (peer to peer carsharing). I have helped forge partnerships with local governments, community
organizations, Fortune 500's and developers across the country and around the world. Through my life, my
education, and my career I have been, and remain committed to making myself as useful as possible in the
mission of reimagining and revitalizing our urban spaces for people, not just cars, and helping our cities
become more sustainable and inclusive centers of community and opportunity.
Additionally, I co-host a podcast called The Mayors alongside Richard Florida, renowned urbanist and
author of Rise of the Creative Class and New Urban Crisis. In The Mayors we interview mayors across the
country and around the world – from LA Mayor Eric Garcetti (yesterday) to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance
Bottoms to smaller town mayors like Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken. We discuss urban planning and
design, innovative solutions and partnerships with regard to housing, homelessness, parking, and mobility.
I live and breathe these issues every day and am deeply committed to this community. I believe I will bring
unique perspective, experience, and relationships to the board.
The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have
engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI.
I am a white Irish kid from Great Falls who's family still owns the original homestead our family was given by
this country. I was raised by a great Mom and Dad, grew up with 3 strong Montanan sisters and a loving big
brother. I have lived a life of privilege that in at least a small way can be traced back to that little piece of
land – land, capital, equity – that was given to us. I have a deep appreciation and understanding of the
relationship between land and diversity, equity, and inclusion -- especially what it means for Native
Americans and Black Americans in this country. I have studied these issues extensively and have been
trained in bias training and leadership programs. But it is not lost of me that it is an intellectual, not a lived
experience. I have so much more to learn and have committed much of my career and time to this work
and being a good ally and member of my communities.
At WeWork I led our global Social Impact team. Most notably, following Trump's travel ban announcement
in Jan 2016, I spearheaded the formation of a global refugee hiring initiative to hire 1,500 refugees over 5
years. We partnered with the IRC, Upwardly Global, and local refugee organizations around the country.
Also while at WeWork, I built and grew the WeWork + Bunker Labs Veterans in Residence program, a free 6
month startup incubator for veteran and military spouses who wanted to launch a startup or small
business. The program is now operating in 25 cities across the country (Bozeman too! but not w/ WeWork
of course), and has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs to date. I now serve on the Bunker Labs Board of
Directors.
Most recently as SVP of Communications & Public Affairs at REEF, my team built the Neighborhood
Restaurant Development Program to offer free space and support to local, women, and BIPOC owned
restaurants and food entrepreneurs.
Perhaps the thing I am most proud of, is that I have in my career successfully hired and built teams of
diverse leaders. I was taught, by leaders better than me, to always go outside my networks, to lead by
example, and build truly diverse teams so the organization would copy that leadership and create systems
and a culture of diverse hiring and advancement. At both REEF and WeWork I built 25+ person teams and
am proud that we were always one of the most diverse in the company, with women and people of color in
the most important and most senior roles. If you call any of the folks from the teams I built and had the
honor to lead I am confident that above all else they would say I always had their back. How we hire, how
we spend our money, the daily decision we make are the decisions that ultimately add up and create
ripples of positive or negative impact.
I have learned a lot about diversity, equity, and inclusion through these experiences and I continue to seek
opportunities to expand my understanding and ability to be useful in creating a community of inclusion,
opportunity and belonging.
