(○) No Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. I am a born-and-raised Bozeman local and have seen the city grow throughout my lifetime. After a few years away, I recently moved back to Bozeman. The unique quality of life, both in town and out our back door, brought me home. My interest in serving on the Community Development Board lies in maintaining these qualities for everyone as the city grows. Well-designed and thoughtfully crafted buildings and urban spaces play a significant part in creating a city that promotes culture, community engagement, diversity, and inclusivity. I have always been interested in the power of physical places, which I can attribute at least partially to having grown up in the incredible natural and rural landscapes that bring Bozeman so much of its identity. This led me to pursue a Built Environment Bachelor's Degree at the University of Utah and then an Architecture Master's Degree at RISD. I was able to hone my skills as a designer and problem solver, but also as a critical listener; I find that design benefits from multiple points of view. In my professional life, I have worked in a number of design related roles at architecture and interior design firms ranging in size from very small to very large, including a non-profit community planning and outreach organization in rural Utah. I have contributed to a diverse set of projects including high end residential, large tech office interiors, a community radio station, and a non-profit writing center. The thread in all of this work has been a focus on the experience, the sequence, the tactile nature of spaces rather than architecture as an object or form. Now, working primarily in the area of residential design, I miss the connection to the community in which I live. I want to see Bozeman thrive as it grows into an urban space that complements the incredible natural landscape that surrounds it. I feel that the Community Development Board would benefit from my skills as a designer who creates spatial experiences and my desire to improve the urban landscape for the benefit of future generations. Bozeman is growing, and this growth creates a unique opportunity to further position Bozeman as a diverse, inclusive, conscientious city. I am excited to bring my experience working on a range of urban projects and foster the built environment that will define positive change for the city of Bozeman. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. Awareness, education, and engagement in DEI is something that I understand I am just starting to dip my toes into and will continue to be a lifelong endeavor. I am striving not to think of myself as an ‘expert’ in a situation but rather someone who knows just enough to depend on multiple points of view to gather a more complete picture. In more concrete terms this has manifested in the following actions: - An effort to take opportunities to live, study, and work in a variety of social and cultural environments. - An effort to attend public rallies and causes, specifically with open ears ready to hear what brings people out - What are they here for? How is that aligning with or different from why I am here? - Research and be aware of sources of my media, news, entertainment consumption. - Asking the question of myself and my friends, social groups, ‘when we don’t see diversity here, why is that? What barriers are in place that are (systemically) exclusionary? Why / why not? - Actively supporting campaigns of diverse candidates for public office. As a member of this board, one question that would guide my work: Are these spaces/plans/actions intentionally designed for a diverse population, or are they simply un-exclusive? Diverse opinions are harder, but I do truly believe they make for a better, more resilient future for everyone.
