(○) Yes How long have you lived in the Bozeman Area? (○) 1-5 years Have you ever served on a City or County Board or Commission? (○) No Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. While I know little of zoning ordinances, 'community planning,' and only follow the latest updates coming out of the Montana legislator, my five-year experience in Bozeman has solely been at the heart of the issues we face together in this city's growth (or lack thereof), the housing crisis, and the existence of (un)tenable wages. I have been homeless previously in Bozeman, primarily when I moved back to the city to attend MSU in the Fall of 2017. After being without stable shelter myself, scraping by with rent as both a preschool teacher and an undergraduate student, I dug my roots into this community and fostered all the well-being I thought I possibly could conjure up as an individual here: I volunteered several times a week at the Warming Center, the formerly-known 'Community Cafe' (Fork n Spoon), and got involved with the Gallatin Valley Food Bank, maintaining weekend pick-ups. During the pandemic, and since the uprisings after the murder of George Floyd, I became more involved with outreach in my community- organizing with Bozeman United for Racial Justice (where I still coordinate community and student outreach weekly). I recently graduated from Montana State University with a degree in philosophy, primarily in political studies and contemporary critical studies- which is just exemplar of the work I do in Bozeman now. As a facet of community outreach for several organizations and a person at the heart of Bozeman's growth, of the every day people's struggle, I find that I am an adequate individual to be involved with the community development panel; and I believe ANYONE who is grounded by their unchosen material conditions and work in this city deserves a shot at being on this board. Those of us who are focal to these struggles are those who not only desire change- we need it. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. Besides my involvement as an organizer and activist with Bozeman's BIPOC-led organization Bozeman United for Racial Justice, I have made it a devotion of my life to take up the necessary 'work' as a white, cisgendered man in order for marginalized voices (black, indigenous non-binary/trans/femme folks) to step in and obtain roles where, historically, they have been impacted most and left out. Considering BIPOC and/or queer folks of our city are almost entirely composed of working-class status- at the heart of this city's struggles- I believe they should obtain positions of leadership and involvement first- and-foremost for the incredible knowledge BIPOC, LGBTQI+ Bozemanites craddle in their existence in this city. As an undergraduate, I have made the bolstering of Black and indigenous voices are pillar of mine, writing almost exclusively on the statistical and historical pitfalls of white knowledge (or, better yet, white ignorance) that compose so many tangible and epistemological (i.e. non-real, but realized through things like wealth disparities) 'norms' in our world. My work has been published in three different peer-reviewed journals and I have presented it at two separate conferences. But, with all the above in mind, a theoretical, ivory towered lens only bares weight if the words hit pavement with praxis- and I can only hope that my involvement as an organizer, at protests, and accountability in this city can speak to that. If appointed, do you understand you will be expected to take online and in person ethics training? (○) Yes How did you hear about this board or vacancy? I think I initially heard of this through Chris Coburn's campaigning posts online. Is there any other information that you feel we need to know?
