(○) 6-10 years Have you ever served on a City or County Board or Commission? (○) No Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. I have a degree in Geography from the University of Vermont where I focused on human and urban geography. Coming out of college I had a serious interest in planning and sustainable communities, but ended up in the nonprofit world by chance. I’ve worked for a number of nonprofits and seen what organizational factors help an organization succeed and fail. Though I seemingly work with data, the part of my work that I am best at and enjoy the most is working with others to understand their processes and bring efficiencies to their work which is sometimes through technology and sometimes through process change. Basically, I identify problems and come up with solutions on both a programmatic and administrative level. Over the years, I’ve identified that ‘justice’ and ‘equality’ are some of my core values which are clearly on display when I start thinking about socio-economic injustices in Bozeman. I get really worked up. It’s time to harness that energy towards something positive which is what I think the board could provide. Honestly, I’m not far away from totally giving up on this place. I feel that my partner and I contribute a lot to the community and it’s really hard to picture a future as a renter. I come from a lower-middle class family and I’ve seen how that financial barrier has and will continue to impact me and others until the system changes. I’d also like to say that while I’ve been very frustrated by my financial inability to settle in Bozeman, I am super privileged as a white male and don’t have nearly as many barriers as others (BIPOC, other genders, sexual preference, etc). The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. I’ve been working full time for the Montana Conservation Corps for almost three years. We have been doing DEI training since long before I arrived. I actively participate in monthly training and every so often contribute to our DEI committee at large. In my own time, I’ve had an ongoing interest in injustices in the criminal system and read a number of books, listened to podcasts, etc. I’m by no means close to perfect, but have put a lot of effort into DEI over the years and understanding how I operate/perceive people in the world and how their experiences might be different. Christopher Coburn Is there any other information that you feel we need to know? I am open to other boards, but would want to talk more about what the roles entail. I’m not totally sure Economic Vitality is even where I’d be most excited.
