I have served on the City of Bozeman Economic Development Board for approx. 3 years Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. I have spent many years investing in economic development in our community, because I believe that is a key way to building sustainable economies. This board stands out to me as a thrilling opportunity to continue pursuing my passion of building economic stability in Gallatin and Park counties, and I have done this in many ways in the past, through academic research, public advocacy, and direct service. In my academic experience, I spent my undergraduate and graduate studies being mentored by Dr. Wendy Stock, Ph.D, an MSU economist who specializes in labor markets. This led to me completing my master’s degree examining the effects of equal pay laws on female labor force participation. Through my thesis research, I learned the importance of effective policy implementation. After realizing how important policy creation is, I sought a role where I could have an impact. HRDC, our local Community Action Agency, serves over 13,000 people a year, of which 11,000 qualify as low-income. I was Economic Development Director at HRDC for 4.5 years. As the youngest director at the agency, this role required little supervision, hard work, self-motivation, and team-work. In this role, I oversaw a small staff team and several different state and federal programs. This required me to implement legislation at the local level, learn different department procedures (Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services), and advocate at the state level with different committees (most notably the State Workforce Investment Board (SWIB)). In this role at HRDC, I also helped to build sector partnerships and help create career pipelines for our local communities. This has included work in the Manufacturing, Culinary and Hospitality industries. Our sector partnerships have included partners from higher education, government agencies, city officials, and non- profits. Additionally in this role, I wrote and won numerous grants from private, state and federal agencies. I also built an entirely donor funded homeless youth shelter for Bozeman. This required me to network with donors, city councilmen, and community members to present the economic benefits of stably housing youth, along with anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness, and advocate for support. After HRDC, I worked at MoFi for 1.5 years. MoFi is our local community development financial institution who's main service is to provide financing to small business owners. In my role at MoFi, I worked with our 200+ small businesses to build inclusive hiring practices, and provide other services to help small businesses. This allowed me to see the many barriers that small businesses face, and the needed support that could help. In this position, I also oversaw a down-payment assistance program, and a small dollar loan program. Now, as Executive Director at NRMEDD, my passion is to work towards providing excellent and high quality economic development services to Gallatin and Park Counties. This begins by understanding the factors that are constraining our economic growth, and providing creative solutions to solve these problems. At the moment, this means tackling our workforce and childcare shortages, and housing affordability. I think solutions will be driven by convening effective collaborations for local organizations and businesses to work together to solve these problems. Throughout all of these experiences, I've built a great working relationship with Brit Fontenot. I look up to Brit, and deeply respect him and his work. I hope to continue investing in a close working relationship, because together we can leverage resources to get a lot of effective projects accomplished that will change our community. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. I deeply value diversity, equity, and inclusion. These values have been ingrained in me through travel. I have had the fortunate opportunity to travel--which is truly an opportunity afforded to me, and I am aware of that. I have been to Germany twice, Ethiopia three times, and Peru. In Ethiopia, I built from the ground up, an English summer camp for Orphans, partnering with an NGO located in Addis Ababa. I can speak intermediate German, dabbled in Amharic, and am teaching myself Spanish, with high goals to become fluent in more languages. I have spent my time and money investing in learning about other cultures because I highly value diversity and inclusion. I spent hours playing soccer and sitting with young children in Ethiopia because I want to know their language, their beliefs, and their culture. All of these experiences have built in me a deep love of other cultures, beliefs, languages, and social structures. If I could spend my life hearing others' stories and helping others feel valued and heard, I would. I spend hours volunteering in an effort to contribute toward this cause. After seeing peoples, cultures, and places of various economies of prosperity, combined with my work experience, this has led me to know one thing: without a doubt, I want to spend my life researching poverty, and advocating for policy that will drive equality and economic prosperity.
