Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you
a good fit for this board.
My professional background is in education and workforce development. In my current role, I serve as
Graduate Dean at Montana State. Many of our graduate students are looking to start companies or bring
their skills and knowledge to companies and organizations in Bozeman and Gallatin County. Graduate
education is at the heart of the Land Grant mission, developing the expertise that our communities need to
help solve our toughest challenges. My work in the graduate school spans all departments and faculty from
across campus, ranging from art, to nursing, to infectious diseases, to photonics, to education.
Graduate students are also particularly vulnerable to the shortage of affordable housing and rentals.
When I lived in Iowa, I served two terms on the ASSET Board https://www.storycountyasset.org/ which
assessed the community's social service needs (food, shelter, childcare, medical, dental,...) and allocated
funding to agencies in the area. This experience taught me the importance of holistic and integrated
services to help our most vulnerable community members.
My approach in all that I do is collaborative, I emphasize listening and deliberation. In both my professional
and community work I am known for thinking about creative solutions and being able to analyze data to
reveal patterns and inform decisions.
I am motivated to serve as it is important to try to use my skills, energy, and knowledge to help make the
community where I live a more vital home for all. This is a first step for me in Bozeman. I regret that I have
not yet helped much in the first two years I have lived here. This application is similar to how I was able to
serve my community in Iowa.
The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have
engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI.
In my professional role as Graduate Dean and I am responsible for advancing DEI across all our graduate
programs. I am committed to learning and growing in my understanding of inclusion and equity. In my
professional roles, I have had experience organizing (and facilitating) workshops on implicit bias for faculty
and graduate peers, recruiting pathways for students from historically marginalized groups, running a $1M
scholarship program for graduate students from diverse backgrounds, and leading a national program to
prepare graduate students to teach at diverse 2-year colleges. At MSU, I am working on making systemic
changes to increase inclusion on our campus. This includes removing the GRE requirement for graduate
admission (a standardized test that is a barrier for many students) and building a peer mentoring program
for incoming graduate students. In my community work, the ASSET board was committed to the success of
all our community members.
