(○) 6-10 years Have you ever served on a City or County Board or Commission? (○) No Please describe your professional and personal experiences, interest, and qualifications that make you a good fit for this board. For as long as I can remember I have been concerned about the impact of humans on the environment. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Ecology and was set to become a researcher when I had an awakening. I was not content to document the extinction of plants and animals as a biologist. I wanted to be part of the workforce that changed how we do business. As a result, I pursued a career in sustainability. I eventually earned my MBA so that I could be better equipped to craft the financial solutions needed to address sustainability. I have worked in sustainability in higher education for over 13 years, first as a sustainability analyst at the University of California, San Diego and currently as the Sustainability Director at Montana State University. Advancing sustainability at Montana State University for the past 8 years has given me a keen understanding of the local challenges as well as access to sustainability researchers and practitioners. One of my strengths is my ability to listen to others and identify obstacles and solutions to the cross-cutting sustainability problems, without making assumptions or assigning blame. I strive to educate and motivate action in every aspect of sustainability. As a member of the board, I will work to understand and communicate policy and financial constraints that have to be solved as our community seeks to meet and exceed the goals put forth in the Bozeman Climate Action Plan. I feel that with my experience at MSU and my commitment to sustainability in Bozeman and the state of Montana, I am uniquely qualified to serve on this board. I am looking forward to giving back to the City in such a meaningful way. The City of Bozeman strongly values diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Describe any efforts you have engaged in to expand your understanding of DEI. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion should be integrated into every sustainability practice. At first, I pursued environmental studies because of my desire to address the profound environmental injustice throughout the US and the world. As a college student I learned about diversity of cultures and environmental justice. My college and work experience in California was rich in diversity and I developed strong friendships with colleagues which allowed us to explore our differences with curiosity, compassion and a lot of humor. It was later, while researching change management and organizational behavior that I came to appreciate the value of inclusion. When I first started at MSU, I was often the only woman in the room so I can say first hand, that representation matters. I’m fortunate in that I have had the opportunity to work in Europe and Asia where I was immersed in different cultures. I realize this is just scratching the surface on what I don’t know. It is humbling and I work each year to complete the DEI courses offered at MSU, to seek out and learn from BIPOC authors and creators. I am currently participating in a faculty seminar to learn how to create a more welcoming environment for students from tribal nations and tribal colleges. For me, this is a life-long learning process of how to create conditions that will allow everyone to flourish, and a process of learning what I don’t know, and especially what I don’t know I don’t know.
